Terrorists Plotting German Train Bombing Wanted A "Bloodbath"

A German policeman is quoted as saying that Lebanese terrorists who were planning a series of train bombings in Germany were seeking a "bloodbath" of civilians. This is from the 2006 failed bomb plot where the planted devices failed and the terrorists had cited the "muhammed cartoons" as the reason for the planned attack. This is the first indication on what outcome the bombers had actually been looking for.

DUESSELDORF, Germany: Two Lebanese men allegedly behind a botched plot to bomb German trains intended to cause a "bloodbath," a federal policeman told a court here Thursday citing a convicted accomplice. "They wanted to kill people - as many as possible," Ulrich Schonart told the court, quoting an account Jihad Hamad, now 23, gave Lebanese authorities in the officer's presence.
"There was never any doubt that they wanted to see the attack through to the end," he added. Hamad was sentenced last month in Beirut to 12 years in prison for his part in the failed attack in July 2006.

Hamad had told authorities the plot was revenge for satirical cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad published in European newspapers.
