It Is A Pope

By Findalis
Monkey in the Middle

Since February 28th the Roman Catholic Church has been without a Pope when Pope Benedict XVI stepped down from the Holy See.  Since yesterday afternoon the Princes of the Church, the College of Cardinals has been praying and contemplating a successor to him.

Today a new Pope has been chosen.  The Cardinal from Argentina, Jorge Mario Bergoglio.  He will be known to the world as Francis I.

Born 17 December 1936 to working class parents, he attended the seminary in Villa Devoto.  He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) on 11 March 1958 and was ordained on 13 December 1969.

Pope Frances has rejected Liberation theology, same-sex marriage, women priests, abortion and euthanasia.  He is a humble man, who is a champion of the poor and working classes from which he arose.

Frances I is the first  pope from Latin America and the first to be chosen out of Europe in 1500 years.

As a practicing Catholic I rejoice in his humility. A very good man.

But why would he oppose Liberation Theology? I understand abortion and the others, but from what I read in that link, Liberation Theology sounds a lot like the stuff Jesus preached. No? Kind of baffling to oppose theology very similar to Jesus'. Especially if you are a newly elected Pope.

Also why the ban on women priests? I'm not Catholic, so I don't understand that one. Is it strictly a Catholic thing?

Thanks.

Well I'm aware that Jesus never taught Communism, but according to the link that was provided the first sentence describing Liberation Theology was as follows: Liberation theology is a Christian school of theology that developed in Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s, focusing on liberation of the oppressed.

Didnt Jesus champion such ideas? The liberation of the oppressed? Taking care of the meek?

And on the subject of equality. Didnt Jesus decry the inequality of his time? In which ways are we equal and which ways are we not?

No he never talked about the oppressed. And the only time he mentioned the meek was in the Sermon on the Mount: Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
---Matthew 5:5

Jesus concerned himself with G-d and G-d's word. His message is one of hope and salvation through his sacrifice. Not of robbing the rich to give to the poor. That is the message of Robin Hood. Most people get the messages mixed up.

I suggest you start reading the Bible. Your eyes will be opened to many truths about Jesus and his ministry while reading the Gospels.

I don't think Argentina had a communist government. They had a Military Junta that was anti-communist.

I also don't see the reason to object to women priests. There are women CEO's, women Prime Ministers and women Presidents. So why not women Popes, and women Priests?

I'm not a Catholic so I really don't give a damn if women are priests or not. For that you have to take it up with a Catholic. If they don't want women priests they don't have to have them. The same goes for a married clergy.

I know Jesus never advocated for armed robbery.

But he also went on a rampage on the money changers in the temple.

He also criticized the wealthy Pharisees for their hypocrisy and instructed the rich to give up their wealth.

There's also the camel through the eye of the needle remark. He clearly discouraged immense, obscene material wealth.

Jesus was no Communist or Socialist. But let's nor make him into a Wall Street exec either.

Wasn't his message to lead by example?

Wouldn't a married Clergy rid the Vatican of the problems they've been having? Regarding children?

Also how is the new Pope humble when he won't support women clergy?

And if you don't give a damn as you said, why trump his "humbleness?" Why sing his praises?
