I know that the Pakistanis have tried it many times to form lashkars (tribal militias) to oppose the Taliban in their midst but usually they have fallen apart as the Taliban have the numbers to squash them eventually but this most recent clash between Taliban and one of these tribal militias went exceptionally bad for the Taliban, it appears.

From the report at DAWN:

At least 20 militants were killed and many were injured in the Masood Zai area of central Kurram on Saturday during clash between the militants and the locals, DawnNews reported.

Fifteen members of the local anti-Taliban militia were also injured in the clash. The Associated Press quoted at least 13 militants being killed in the clash.

They have killed 25 insurgents in clashes this week.

It's been a disappointment that not more of these militias haven't formed in Pakistan and Afghanistan to take on the Taliban in both cases - we saw this so successfully in Iraq with the awakenings taking on al Qaeda in Iraq. The problem with Pakistan is that just over two mountains are enough Taliban to literally come in and wipe out several of the tribe's villages and in Afghanistan, well....those people have been so dumbed down that they can barely feed themselves.

Either way, I hope this one militia can succeed and prosper and perhaps word of it will spread. This is one of the keys to eventually ridding the country of the Taliban.

Kurram is located near Afghanistan. The Pakistani military also has carried out several offensives against Taliban who are hiding in the area after escaping last year’s offensive in the nearby Orakzai tribal region.
