Iran's Revolutionary Guard Chief, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, today said this:
Now, it is never unusual to hear outlandish things out of Tehran from the ayatollah down to peon misfits like Ali Jafari. The Iranians are infamous for acting tough with words - kind of like the fat middle-aged slob yelling at opposing football players while he sits in the 42nd row of the third deck of the football stadium, but what is interesting here is that there is more and more speculation from the intelligence community that perhaps Hezbollah and/or Syria were actually the assasins of all star thug, Imad Mughniyeh. I am not ready to call Hezbollah or Syria the killers but let's look at some of the indicators:
1. When's the last time we heard of any activity by Mughniyeh? Hell, most people in the world had never heard of him. He had been in hiding for years and was quite frankly, ineffective because of it. His effectiveness would increase greatly as a martyr, yes?
2. It just so happens that the night that "someone" gets into Mughniyeh's vehicle to plant an explosive is the night that he is attending a function with the Iranian ambassador and Syrian officials. Hmmm....who would know for sure where he would be that night?
3. Have we heard a single claim out of Israel that they did this?
4. Finally, this assassination also follows a pattern of well coordinated planning of events on the part of Iran, Syria and Hezbollah since their joint meetings in Iran last year. Hezbollah and Syria have effectively stalled off the elections in Lebanon for many months now and this latest event, the assassination, leads to a next phase perhaps of direct intervention into Lebanon by Syria.
Like I said, I'm not a 100% behind this theory but I got a feeling about it. The signs are certainly there for a coordinated push towards attacks on Israel and my guess is that the Iranians determined long ago that Syria's assistance would be needed in Lebanon - Hezbollah got much of their fat ass kicked in the last war with Israel and Syria's involvement would make it a more even fight.
I guess we will have to wait. And hope I'm wrong.
