This happened a couple of days ago but it is sinificant. Al Shabaab continues to influence Somalia each and every week.
The story comes from The Clarion Project.
Al-Shabaab Attacks Somali Police Station, Kills 12
The Somalian terrorist group Al-Shabaab launched an attack on a police station killing at least 12. The station was also shared with African Union peacekeeping forces in Somalia to helping the government fight the Al-Qaeda-linked group.
The attack began with a car-bomb which turned the station’s gate into a ball of fire. The terrorists then entered the station firing assault rifles, machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades, according to witnesses. Ten members of the security forces and two civilians were killed, according to Somalian authorities.
Claiming responsibility for the attack, Al-Shabaab spokesman, Sheikh Abdiaziz Abu Musab, said 18 members of the African peacekeeping force were killed along with 23 Somali police, numbers that were not confirmed.
The attack in Beledweyne, a commercial center located 200 miles north of the capital city Mogadishu and near the border with Ethiopia, follows a suicide attack last month by the Al-Shabaab at a café in the city which killed 16 people.
In response to the attack, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said, “Our enemies need to understand that these attacks do nothing to advance their cause, however misguided. We are making great progress while our enemies are on the back foot and reduced to sporadic and self-defeating attacks with no regard to life."
Al-Shabaab was also responsible for the September attack on the Westgate mall in Nairobi, Kenya in which 67 people were killed (including six soldiers) over the course of the four-day onslaught.
Al-Shabaab was designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. in 2008. It seeks to overthrow Somalia’s elected government and institute Islamic (sharia) law in its place.
