Celebrations around Egypt as Mohammed Morsi is ousted
Hundreds of thousands celebrate in Tahrir Square, jubilantly waving flags and letting off fireworks to celebrate the news that President Mohammed Morsi has been ousted by the military.
Gen Abdulfattah al-Sisi, the head of the army, made a televised address to the nation accusing Mr Morsi of rejecting calls for national dialogue.
He announced a suspension of the constitution and the forming of an interim government, which would lead to new elections.
The General appointed the chief justice of the constitutional court as interim president with “full powers of decree”.
Hundreds of thousands of protesters could be seen cheering and letting off fireworks in response to the news, in cities around Egypt.
The announcement came at the end of a 48-hour deadline imposed by the military for Mr Morsi to respond to citizens demands or face their intervention.
