Pakistani Military Brings the Helicopter Gunships Out of Mothballs....12 Taliban Killed in Kurram

Finally! And as I mentioned yesterday, this may just be part of the reason why the Taliban claimed a nationwide ceasefire because they got tipped off that the Pakistani military was beginning to ramp things up again, but last night, Pakistani helicopter gunships descended on Kurram agency and when all of the smoke and guts had cleared, a dozen Taliban lay dead with 14 wounded.

From the report at DAWN:

Helicopter gunships attacked militant hideouts in Kurram, a northwestern tribal region on the Afghan border, killing around a dozen militants and wounding 14, local officials said.

Four hideouts were destroyed, they said. On Tuesday night, at least 11 militants were killed and six soldiers wounded in clashes the same region.

This is the first report I've seen of Taliban killed by chopper crews in Pakistani in probably six months - I might have missed a couple but there certainly haven't been many. I doubt that this is the signal to a major operation as the Pakistanis usually formally announce that kind of thing but it's encouraging to see some firepower devoted to the fight for once.

I've said it before - the Pakistani military is good at killing Taliban....we just need to get them in that mode. And keep them there.

Militant hideouts pounded in Kurram; dozen killed

PARACHINAR: Helicopter gunships attacked militant hideouts in Kurram, a northwestern tribal region on the Afghan border, killing around a dozen militants and wounding 14, local officials said.

Four hideouts were destroyed, they said. On Tuesday night, at least 11 militants were killed and six soldiers wounded in clashes the same region.

There was no independent confirmation of the death toll. Militants often dispute the government’s version of events.
