Dissecting an Honor Killing

First off, this is a very brief article from DAWN but as you will see, horrific stories do not have to be lengthy.

Let's first take a look at the text of the entire article here:

A woman and her two young daughters were shot dead by two male members of their family here early Friday.

According to Baghbanpura police, Arshad, resident of Gulshan Colony, Mubarik Shah road, had gone to purchase sacrificial animals from Arifwala. Meanwhile, police said Ikram and Lala came and shot dead Sughra, wife of Arshad, and his two daughters Shahzadi and Saima.

The accused were the brothers of Arshad and were told by locals that some men had come to their brother’s house in his absence.

SSP operation Ahmed Virk reached the site of crime and launched an investigation. The bodies of the deceased three women were sent to district headquarter hospital for post mortem.

Okay, let me dissect this cowardly act of murder:

  1. Arshad is the husband and the father of the two girls
  2. Arshad leave home for a trip to go purchase some animals
  3. Sughra is his wife, his daughters are Shahzadi and Saima
  4. Ikram and Lala are Arshad's brothers
  5. While Arshad is away from home, some people go to his brothers, Ikram and Lala and tell them that some non-relative men have visited the home of Arshad where Sughra is
  6. Ikram and Lala, upon hearing of this travesty that men outside of the family may have actually spoken with their brother's wife, his possession, go to the house....pull out their guns, and proceed to shoot and kill Sughra and her two daughters (their nieces) Shahzadi and Saima

Okay, we do need to remind ourselves that this is the year 2011 and not 711 A.D. Let me ask a couple of questions - what if the "strange men" actually had gone to the house of Arshad to ask for directions? What if the "strange men" were actually men who Arshad had hired to help with the killing of the sacrificial animals and they had come by to finalize when they were to be there for the sacrifice? What if it was a lie that was told to the two brothers? And what does Arshad think when he comes home to find that he is no longer a husband or father?

By the way, did the two uncles HAVE to kill the two girls?

A woman and her two young daughters are dead today because they talked to some men that weren't their relatives. Wouldn't Mo be proud as a peacock?
