Just a reminder that al Qaeda in Iraq can strike just about any time, anywhere as today in Iraq two separate bombings were executed. The first happened in Fallujah where a bomb was hidden on a military bus that was transporting some Iraqi troops at a military base - that explosion killed 15 of the Iraqi troops. The second bombing focused on killing civilians south of Baghdad and hit a market area....and while no one was killed, 25 people were wounded.

From the article at DAWN:

A bomb attached to a military bus killed 15 Iraqi soldiers and wounded 20 others when it went off at an army base in western Iraq on Wednesday, army sources said.

They said the explosion occurred inside an Iraqi military base in Habaniya, near the town of Falluja around 85 km (50 miles) west of Baghdad.

“The soldiers finished their academic training and a bus took them to have breakfast at the restaurant in the base. When the bus reached the restaurant it exploded,” one of the sources said.

In a separate incident, at least 25 people were wounded when a bomb exploded by restaurants and coffee shops in the town of al-Hamza, just south of Hilla, 100 km (60 miles) south of Baghdad, police sources said.

One thing I have noticed over the past six months or so is the absolute lack of any reports coming out of Iraq in regards to capture or killing of al Qaeda forces - now, it may be that we just aren't hearing it but at the same time, if a major cell had been found and caught or killed, it certainly would have made mention somewhere.

I'm not sure if al Qaeda in Iraq has simply blended so completely into the background in Iraq or if it is just the fact that the Iraqis aren't getting the intelligence that was being received a couple of years ago when we were literally seeing al Qaeda operatives being rounded up or eliminated about twice a month.

FALLUJA, Iraq: A bomb attached to a military bus killed 15 Iraqi soldiers and wounded 20 others when it went off at an army base in western Iraq on Wednesday, army sources said.

Bombings and killings occur on a daily basis in Iraq more than eight years after the US-led invasion, although violence has dropped from the peak of sectarian fighting in 2006-07.

Assaults on the country’s army and police have been rising as they prepare to take sole responsibility for security ahead of an expected full withdrawal of US troops by year-end.

Iraqi politicians are trying to decide whether to ask Washington to leave some troops in Iraq after Dec. 31 to continue to train the army and police.

In August, 45 police and 39 soldiers were killed, according to figures from the interior and defence ministries.
