Those Doggone Egyptians Just Looking For "Democracy" Try To Assassinate the Egyptian Vice President

Apparently, those "freedom loving" democracy craving hordes in Egypt aren't too fond of the new Vice President of Egypt as they tried to assassinate him yesterday or the day before - two of his bodyguards didn't escape the attempt and are dead but the signal's been sent I guess - "we want the kind of democracy where everyone bows down to mullahs."

From the article at the NY Post:

Two bodyguards were killed in an assassination attempt on Egypt's newly-minted vice-president -- a chilling development in the delicate push to shift power away from embattled President Hosni Mubarak.

The unsuccessful attempt to kill Omar Suleiman, who became the first vice president in Mubarak's iron-fisted 30-year rule, came in the past couple of days as violent unrest rocked Cairo, according to Fox News.

"It's amazing this hasn't been picked up ... because he is the transition plan, or at least one of them for the Egyptians," the official said.

The official did not have details about how many people were involved in the attack but said it was very "organized" and occurred during a motorcade movement, adding that Suleiman managed to escape unhurt.

"This was an organized attack to take out the number two man in that government. Who was behind the attack and what happened in retaliation we don't know. It was being closely held because it was believed to be very sensitive to have word get out that attackers almost were able to kill the man who had just been named [vice president]," he said.

Suleiman, a pro-Western politician with a background in the intelligence community, figures prominently into plans to temporarily succeed Mubarak in a caretaker government should he step aside.

I wonder, if the Muslim Brotherhood get someone name to a top level in the government...do you suppose there will be an assassination attempt on his life? Yeah, right. As you can see from the article, the usually jabbering Obama administration doesn't seem to have much comment about this assassination attempt - perhaps they are just angry it wasn't successful.

Assassins took aim at Suleiman

CAIRO -- Two bodyguards were killed in an assassination attempt on Egypt's newly-minted vice-president -- a chilling development in the delicate push to shift power away from embattled President Hosni Mubarak.

The unsuccessful attempt to kill Omar Suleiman, who became the first vice president in Mubarak's iron-fisted 30-year rule, came in the past couple of days as violent unrest rocked Cairo, according to Fox News.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs would not comment on the matter when asked yesterday. But a senior administration official later confirmed the attack took place shortly after Suleiman was appointed on Jan. 29 in an attempt to quell unrest.

Suleiman, a pro-Western politician with a background in the intelligence community, figures prominently into plans to temporarily succeed Mubarak in a caretaker government should he step aside.

American officials are pushing opposition groups to meet with him.

However, he also has a history of strong-arm tactics and is feared in the region.
