Back when I was growing-up in The Island, I constantly heard stories about the Spanish Civil War. There were only 35-years separating my formative years, from those terrible events in the Iberian Peninsula. Back then, San Juan was full of Spanish exiles. They were already in their sixties and seventies, and almost all were old Republicans (i.e. Socialists and Communists), who took shelter from Franco and his regime. I latter learnt that their stories of atrocities and tumult were terribly biased, but all heartfelt non the less.

All this background interested me into learning the real history of 1930's Spain, and came to appreciate the hard choices that Franco had to make for the future of his country.

But what I'm getting at is: The dialogue of today, such as expressed in that phone call, is exactly the discourse that prevailed in Spain in from 1931 on.

Spain an advanced European country, with a strong tradition of civil political discourse, plunged itself into a fratricidal orgy. In the end, 1 Million Spaniards met an early grave.

Are we, to follow their steps?

Well...wow with a little "w." I guess she was behind the 35 that egged the Tea Party Express bus in Searchlight today?
