I am currently reading Winston Churchill's 6-Tome oeouvre: The Second World War.

In it he details how the Germans and Italians destabilized both Persia and Iraq, and how the British had to rush troops from India, to both countries in order to put both on even keel (BTW did you know that the Luftwaffe had an operational bomber squadron flying out of Mosul Iraq for a while?) Between 1940-41, the Nazis had the Brits running sh*tless all the way to the gates of India.

Anyways, he goes on how the Brits and latter with the help of the Americans, how they developed the Trans-Persian railway, in order to open a supply corridor to the southern flank of the USSR. Fascinating read.
