My first thought here was that the Taliban-linked group of Hizb-i-Islami must be running low on money and weapons and wanted to meet with United Nations officials so they could get on the list for some shipments. But I digress. The report is here from Breitbart that a U.N. official has met with the group regarding potential peace talks - I blogged about this the other day how this group met with the Afghan government and now, just to muddy the waters, the dreaded radical islamic appeasement center, sometimes called the United Nations is getting involved.
It's my guess that the United Nations decided that in order for Hizb-i-Islami to maximize the terms of any agreement, the U.N. needs to be involved.
In my other blogpost, I mentioned how assinine it is to sit down with this group or any other Taliban group and now that they have met with the U.N., the insanity is confirmed.

UN head in Afghanistan meets with militant group
KABUL (AP) - The top U.N. official in Afghanistan has met with a delegation from a Taliban-linked militant group that has extended a peace offer to the Afghan government.
A U.N. statement Thursday says Staffan de Mistura listened to the Hizb-i-Islami delegation's peace proposal and indicated the delegation's discussions with the government underscore the importance of an Afghan-led dialogue toward stabilizing the nation.
It is the first time that high-ranking representatives of warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar's group have traveled to Kabul to discuss peace. It's uncertain whether the talks will lead to an end game in the 8-year-old war. The group is demanding that foreign troops leave Afghanistan a year ahead of President Barack Obama's plan to begin a withdrawal in July 2011.
