Al Qaeda Cell Plotted To Assassinate Israeli Ambassador To Egypt

We heard about the arrests of terrorists in Egypt last month but the depth of their plot wasn't known then...it is now, and the main target of their terrorism was the Israeli ambassador to Egypt. The terror group, with links to al Qaeda, confessed to the full plot in recent interrogations. From the Haaretz article:

Terrorists plotted to assassinate Israel's Ambassador to Egypt and bomb Israel's embassy in Cairo, Egyptian daily Almasry Alyoum reported on Saturday. According to the article, three members of a terror cell were arrested in early July and under interrogation confessed to planning a series of attacks on Egyptian security services, including police stations and government offices, in addition to the Israeli Embassy.

According to confessions they made under police custody, the three men carried out close surveillance on Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Shalom Cohen, but the plot did not come to fruition due to heavy security on Cohen and the Israeli Embassy in Cairo.
This plot probably didn't get that close to action but it shows that the Israelis are under siege in every country in the world that they have a presence. And let's face it, nearly every terror group has them in their sites, whether it be al Qaeda, Hezbollah or Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Report: Terror cell plotted to kill Israeli Ambassador to Egypt

Terrorists plotted to assassinate Israel's Ambassador to Egypt and bomb Israel's embassy in Cairo, Egyptian daily Almasry Alyoum reported on Saturday. According to the article, three members of a terror cell were arrested in early July and under interrogation confessed to planning a series of attacks on Egyptian security services, including police stations and government offices, in addition to the Israeli Embassy. The terrorists were arrested as a result of a violent robbery of a jewelry store in Cairo in May 2008, which they told police they carried out in order to fund the terror attacks they were plotting. During the robbery, four Coptic Christians were murdered, including the store's owners.

According to confessions they made under police custody, the three men carried out close surveillance on Israeli Ambassador to Egypt Shalom Cohen, but the plot did not come to fruition due to heavy security on Cohen and the Israeli Embassy in Cairo. According to the report in Almasry Alyoum, the cell was in close contact with Al-Qaida, and planned to take part in attacks the group was plotting in Iraq, after the successful execution of the Cairo terror plot. Legal sources in Egypt reacted skeptically to the publication of the terror plot, saying the group was not capable of carrying out such a scheme, and suggesting that their confessions came as a result of their being tortured while in police custody.
