The commander of the ship should have been given charge of the situation - the fact that he was not is NOT the fault of the president. Like the Colonel said- there are 15 links in the chain between Obama and the Captain. This hostage crisis ended in a best case senario. Bill O'Reilly is a parody of himself.

O'Reilly started out vaguely praising Obama in this piece.

I think a lot of that "praise" is because (like Clinton's handling of the economy in the nineties) he pretty much stayed out of the way and didn't actively do anything to screw things up. (funny but true!)

Then O'Reilly revealed the fullness of his thoughts by agreeing with the assessment Col. Hunt offered.

So where's the parody??

But I certainly agree that Obama should have made it clear that the on-scene commander had full authority to act.

Otherwise, why is the guy a "commander"?!

While I understand channels and protocol and all that rot, what's really to stop a good Commander-in-Chief (as soon as we get one) from just saying on TV the following:

"Even though the paperwork may not have caught up on this yet, I want everyone with an ear to know that I have full confidence in the on-scene commander and hereby authorize him to handle the situation as he sees fit... (insert disclaimer here)".
