Mohammad Khatami, the much more moderate Iranian who is seeking to replace Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iran's President, took the gloves off a bit today and started an offensive in his political campaign calling Ahmadinejad's policies as "damaging" to the country of Iran. Here's the entire brief story over at Breitbart:
While it is always fun to see ANYONE take shots at Ahmadinejad, there's a couple of reasons not to get too excited about the prospect of a new president in Iran. First of all, this dude Khatami, although more moderate and sane than Ahmadinejad, isn't exactly a champion for Western and Israeli interests in the world. Secondly, as far as anything I've ever read, the Iranian election for President is still controlled by the desires of the Ayatollah.
It's not like the Iranian people could shock the world and elect Duncan Hunter as new president of Iran, yanno? But there certainly can be influence by the people of Iran on who wins - the people generally supported Ahmadinejad last time around and then of course they found out after his election that he was incompetent and a nut job - hmmm.....sound familiar, America?
Iran presidential candidate slams Ahmadinejad
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - The main challenger in Iran's presidential race has criticized President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad over the country's international isolation.
Mohammad Khatami's Web site quotes him as saying the "current situation (in Iran) is not desirable."
Khatami warns that if it continues, the country's "social capital and international reputation will be damaged even more."
The remarks were reported late Wednesday. Khatami told a group of supporters that Iran needs an active diplomacy to decrease "international pressures and isolation."
It was the first time he spoke about president since announcing his candidacy for the June elections last weekend. The reformist cleric is a serious challenge to Ahmadinejad.
