Update: Israeli Ground Operations In Northern Gaza

Well folks, I'm a bit surprised at the lack of news this morning coming out of Gaza - I'm not sure if there isn't that much happening yet or if the Israelis are just keeping a tighter lid on it this time but I'll throw at you what I've got. I'm using two sources here...one from YNET and one from The Muqata. First the bad news. The IDF has announced its first dead - an IDF soldier was killed in action fighting Hamas terrorists in northern Gaza - there were no details of this but from what I can tell from some IDF injuries so far, I think the IDF ran into a mortar team from Hamas that did some damage. Here's some of the other detailings from The Muqata:

4:47 PM A second soldier who was evacuated from Gaza in critical condition is currently being operated on, he is now categorized as in Serious condition.
4:44 PM One of the soldiers seriously wounded is the son of Tzviki Bar-Chai, head of the Har Hevron municipal council. He was thrown out of Kfar Darom with the expulsion from Gush Katif. When he was called up he brought along a large orange flag to plant once more in the soil of Gaza.
4:40 PM Released for publication. It is with great sadness that we announce that an IDF soldier was killed in battle this morning, fighting against Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip. Please continue your prayers for the IDF's soldiers and Israeli civilian communities.

Now, for some better news...there is this report out of YNET:

IDF: Senior Hamas operative injured in aerial assault in northern Gaza

Muhammad Shalpuch, of Hamas' Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades' special forces, was injured during an IAF raid in northern Gaza.

The IDF said Shalpuch was senior operative in the organization's rocket fire unit. His condition is unknown.

There is one entry from The Muqata that I think may lead to some big news a bit later today:

5:28 PM Hamas top terrorists hiding out in basement of Gaza's Shifa hospital. (Muqata reported last week of reports that the largest stockpile in Gaza of Katyusha and Grad missiles was also in the same basement) [Channel 1 Israel TV]

One would have to guess that this hospital is a prime target now for the Israelis and of course, leave it to Hamas to hide their sorry asses in a hospital - I'm surprised it isn't a children's hospital.

One concern that I have here and I realize it is early on in the offensive, is the fact that almost a dozen rockets have still been fired into Sderot and Ashdod. Now, I'm going to consider that those rockets are coming from further south into Gaza where the IDF has not gotten to yet but it's just my personal observation that the Israelis seem to be advancing very slowly.

Hopefully, more info to come later.
