Russia's New 'Solidarity' Movement Faces First Government Crackdown

Well, that didn't take long! Just yesterday, I blogged here about how Russia's Liberal party had kicked off their "Solidarity" movement, fashioned after the Polish movement that brought democracy to Poland and in less than 24 hours, this Russian movement's first demonstration was met with Russian security police and one of the two leaders of the movement was hauled away by police. Here's the entire article, from Breitbart:

Russian opposition attempt to rally in Moscow

MOSCOW (AP) - Police have thwarted an anti-Kremlin protest in central Moscow and detained a co-leader of the opposition group that organized it.
Police roughly grabbed protesters who tried to enter the square, which was cordoned off by metal barriers and police trucks. Police dragged about 15 people into a waiting truck, some of them members of a pro-Kremlin youth group that also staged a demonstration Sunday.
Officers seized Eduard Limonov of the group Other Russia along with a handful of bodyguards as they approached the square. Chess great Garry Kasparov is the group's other leader.
Other Russia had vowed to demonstrate in a downtown and march down Moscow's main street despite being denied permission.

Now, I don't think anybody would have guessed that this new movement would have had a cake walk against the Kremlinists but to see one of their leaders hauled away in cuffs in less than 24 hours???!!

I have no idea how popular this movement really is in Russia but if this is any indication of the government's steadfast stance to squash it, we could see some fairly bloody scenes coming out of Russia in the next few months - that is, if there are any of the Solidarity movement left in public!
