Iraqi Police Find And Defuse Bombs Placed Targeting PM Maliki

Iraqi police found and defused some ten bombs in Thi-Qar province in Iraq where Prime Minister Maliki was touring - the bombs were found along the motorcade route of Maliki. Here's some of the details from Aswat al-Iraq:

Policemen on Tuesday defused 10 bombs which are believed to have been placed to target the motorcade of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki who visited the province on Monday, the chief of the local police said.
“Anti-bomb squads defused ten explosive devices, planted by unknown gunmen on al-Houlandi river, believed to be targeting the motorcade of the al-Maliki who inaugurated a project in the province yesterday,” General Sabah al-Fatlawi told Aswat al-Iraq.
Meanwhile, he said “the Thi-Qar police received amounts of weapons and ammunitions, including 80 mortar shells, 80 RBK rifles and 80 cannonballs as well as other weapons.”

These are the kinds of potential scenarios that speak volumes AGAINST President-elect Obama's plans to pull out American troops hastily from Iraq. Not only are there still enough al Qaeda in Iraq threats to the peace in Iraq but there are these assassination type scenarios that could send the fragile government into a tailspin.

I've taken the stand that the U.S. still has troops in areas like South Korea and Kosovo/Bosnia - we don't hear any screaming from the Left in America to pull troops out of those security-based areas - why in the world would we pull our troops completely out of Iraq which is 100 times more volatile?

The issue is stability. The Iraqis are going to be tested over the next couple of years and it just makes sense that the current approved pact between Iraq and America be upheld for the total withdrawl by 2011.

The province’s capital is the city of al-Nassiriya. It also includes the ancient Sumerian ruins of Ur, Eridu, Lagash and Ngirsu. Before 1976 the province was known as al-Muntafiq.
