Three Al Qaeda Leaders In Northern Iraq Surrender

The good news just keeps on coming in Iraq. In the northern area of Sinjar, Iraq coalition troops captured three al Qaeda in Iraq leaders. Here's the news on the surrenders of these leaders according to the report at KUNA:

US forces in Iraq said on Thursday that three suspected terrorists surrendered to Iraqi security and coalition forces.

The US army statement said that Al-Qaeda leader of the Sinjar area surrendered to the Iraqi Army for reconciliation in Kirkuk July 5.

And there were two more al Qaeda in Iraq leaders surrendering in the same general area.

This is just further proof of the clean up of al Qaeda in the northern areas of Iraq - which started months ago with the surge upon al Qaeda in Mosul. And this is a very good sign that as the U.S. and Iraqi troops continue to firm up the northern areas, they will be in a much better position to handle and flow of al Qaeda who decide they want to bolt out of the targeted area of Diyala province in the next week.

What hopefully will be different this time with the operation by U.S. and Iraqi troops in Diyala will be that al Qaeda can't simply high tail it out of Diyala for a harbor of safety in Kirkuk or Mosul. Obviously, the best scenario is that al Qaeda cannot get out of Diyala when the 40,000 troops start their push in Diyala.

In the last Diyala offensive, there really were not that many al Qaeda casualties or captures - I think we are going to see a difference this time as al Qaeda is going to be more boxed in and will literally have to fight or surrender.

Sweet. The only better news would have been if 3 al qaeda leaders would have had their brains blown out. To bad they surrendered. I thought that was unholy to them or something? Maybe some US marines can give them a 'do over' so they can die properly.

Anyway, great to hear of more progress in Iraq. Thanks for posting it.

brent,

Good to see you. I agree, it would be even better to see these three searching for their 72 piglets, err...I mean virgins, but at the same time, I do relish the intel that will come from these three. It has been fairly well known that these al Qaeda "leaders" sing like canaries when interrogated.
