Chinese Close Down 41 Mosques

This is one of the briefest news stories you'll ever see here at Memri Urdu but I guess there never really is a lot of information coming out of the People's Republic of China. But, you gotta admit the MESSAGE is loud and clear:

China Shuts Down 41 Illegal Mosques In Xinjiang Province

China has shut down 41 mosques in the Muslim-dominated province of Xinjiang. According to a report in the New Delhi-based The Times of India newspaper, Chen Zhuangwei, police chief in the Xinjiang’s capital of Urumqi, said the 41 illegal places of worship were being used as training grounds for holy war.
According to the report, the Chinese authorities also announced that they have detained 82 ‘suspected terrorists’ of five organizations due to fears that they might disrupt the Beijing Olympic Games.

Now, China has had its share of problems with the muslims in Xinjiang province and of course, with the Olympics coming up in just another month or so, the Chinese are a little skittish to begin with. At the same time, China has always been one of the countries that have more or less sidestepped the world terror of the islamists and I've normally chalked that up to the fact that no one would deal more harshly with it then the iron fist of the Chinese. But at the same time, China is gonna have the same problem Russia has - a population of muslims that grows and grows and grows.

The Chinese can close down mosques and even bulldoze them but I don't know if they can stop the population explosion of the termites.
