I may be a little too melodramatic with that headline but it certainly looks like the Iranian plan to take over Lebanon has begun in ernest, at least that is how I see it. In my view, this didn't just start a couple of days ago but years ago when the Syrians started assassinating most of the influential top leaders in Lebanon. Then, the Iranians shifted their support and backing to Hezbollah as a quasi-annointed option of a new government much as was seen done when Hamas won elections in the Pali territories. And now, with Lebanon going on almost a year without a President, due to Hezbollah and Syria messing with elections, all hell has broken loose on the streets and the violence and attacks have begun. Here's an excerpt from the story here over at DEBKA:
I just said it last week that the Iranian plan is simple: With Hezbollah in power in Lebanon, they can position the terrorist group as a "government" and thus will be given "rights" to strategic weapons that will simply then be used to target Israel. It won't take Hezbollah much time to conjure up some sort of propaganda that will allow them to hit Israel with long range missiles supplied by their daddies in Tehran. So in the end, we will once again see the world sit on its hands while the Iranians arm themselves with nuclear weapons and at the same time, disrupt and take down the governments of foreign lands.
The tricky part about this standoff in Lebanon is who exactly comes to the aid of the Lebanese government? For once, please just once, could we look to the Europeans to stand up? The French and the British certainly have no love lost for Hezbollah and in fact, the French have a fairly strong historical relationship with the Lebanese...so will this be the time when Sarkozy shows his real cajones and sends in French troops, fighter jets and equipment to at least contain Hezbollah?
It's my fear that the U.S. will not pull the trigger in time on this one and for Israel to push into Lebanon to halt Hezbollah basically would play into "Plan B" of the Iranians, anyway.
Finally, some of you loyal Holger Awakens readers have seen me lay out what I believed was an Iranian plan for a summer takeover of Lebanon and then a major offensive against Israel that would coordinate the leadership of Iran along with forces from Syria, Hezbollah and Hamas. I am not looking for any "boy, you got that right" comments but look at the last sentence of the article at DEBKA that states:
Not good.
Pro-Western Siniora government and Iran-Syria-backed Hizballah forces exchanged fire in the streets of Beirut Wednesday, May 7. DEBKAfile’s sources report both have ordered a general call-up of their adherents.
Hizballah fighters clad in national army and police uniforms are infiltrating government party strongholds in the capital to seize control. In the north and the western Beqaa Valley region of Kharoub, government forces are mobilizing. First units have been sighted heading for Beirut.

Exclusive: Lebanon slides towards new civil conflict
Pro-Western Siniora government and Iran-Syria-backed Hizballah forces exchanged fire in the streets of Beirut Wednesday, May 7. DEBKAfile’s sources report both have ordered a general call-up of their adherents.
Hizballah fighters clad in national army and police uniforms are infiltrating government party strongholds in the capital to seize control. In the north and the western Beqaa Valley region of Kharoub, government forces are mobilizing. First units have been sighted heading for Beirut.
During the day, Hizballah blocked the roads leading to the airport and vowed to keep it under siege until the Siniora government goes back on the decision announced Tuesday, May 6, to shut down the private telecommunications network Iran installed for the group and reinstate the pro-Hizballah airport director Gen. Wafiq Shuqeir. To pile up anti-government pressure, Hizballah called labor unions out on strike.
General Shuqeir was removed after Druze Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt accused Hizballah of installing spy cameras at the airport to monitor the movements of Lebanese and foreign leaders. Jumblatt said incoming flights were bringing the Shiite militia supplies of weapons from Iran.
On August 9, 2007, DEBKAfile first revealed that Iranian military engineers were installing a secret underground telecommunications system to support Hizballah’s missile unit. The network runs through south Beirut, the Beqaa Valley’s Yohmor region near the Syrian border – where Hizballah and the Palestinian Popular Front-GC keep their training facilities – and connect the southern towns of Tyre on the Mediterranean with Abassieh, seat of Hizballah’s southern headquarters.
For the ten months during which this military telecommunications network was being installed, the Beirut government did not dare touch it.
Prime minister Fouad Siniora finally decided enough was enough when satellite images provided by Western agencies showed work on connecting Hizballah’s network with the communications and eavesdropping systems set up by the Syrian army along the Lebanese border.
DEBKAfile’s military sources report that the two networks and their linkage are part of military preparations by Iran, Syria and Hizballah for a possible new flareu-up of hostilities with Israel.

Lets all hope that the Lebanonese Army does better in the south than they did in the north against the pali's. That little fracas in the north that lasted like 90 days, cost Lebanon, in porportion, more casualties than we have had in all of the fighting since we invaded both Afghanistan and Iraq. But then on the flip side of that, when the LF fight, they have no problems leveling whole city blocks. So the question for now is, is it ON yet, or is this more warm-ups.
Another idea I have right now, is that this action in Labanon right now, is perhaps premature (in Iran's eyes). I think the government's response to the com system and airport spying caught the hezbo's off guard, and all of this is going down befor they were fully ready. This time Hezbo may be between a big Hammer(Israel) and now a pissed off Anvil.
Shark,
You make some excellent points here! And I hope you are right that this whole operation got pushed ahead of schedule - I want to see Hezbollah make some serious mistakes and it would be refreshing to see their asses hunted down by their own countrymen.

May not be thus, though big fella, earlier on Shep Smith was reporting on the situation in Lebanon, when he mentioned that a friend and collegue was in southern lebanon last week in one of the villages, there were no men or older boys anywhere near, which would mean they were probably up north in beruit. This is bad, real bad. And it appears that the hezbos are trying hard to make this a sectarian thing instead of a government vs hesbo thing. This would cause the lebanonese army to be totally inaffecive in stopping them.
