This is NOT good news. The United States has always maintained a policy of isolating Hamas - we have never supported any kinds of negotiations with this clan of misfits and minions. Now, the Bush administration is offering up some sort of support for Egypt's role in trying to solidify a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
Here's an excerpt from the FT article:
In other words, Hamas is proving to the world of terrorists that aggression, murder and massacre work. If you are a terrorist and want to get your way, attack your foes relentlessly and even the mighty United States of America will start talking with you.
This may not seem like much to many out there but the American support of this little "mini" peace process is the first step down a road of concilliation that will end up in disaster. Simply put, America shouldn't be voicing support for Egypt's attempt to make nice, America should have flown 20 jet fighters over Gaza and firebombed half of Hamas in a show of total support of Israel. America should have sent the signal to this world's terrorists that if you lob missiles into Israel or any other ally of the U.S., you will pay with your lives and the lives of your countrymen. Indeed...this is a dark day.
Here's an excerpt from the FT article:
In a White House briefing, Dana Perino, spokeswoman for George W. Bush, said she hoped Hamas would stop rocket attacks on Israel from the Gaza Strip after contacts between Cairo and the Palestinian group.Believe me, this is a total break from past stances by the Americans. And it signals to Hamas that their strategies have worked - they breached the borders of Egypt and scared the Egyptians so much that they are now in what seems like weekly talks with the terrorist organization, they bombarded Israel for weeks and weeks and without any backlash from the West, they have been the ones to set terms for ceasefire, and Hamas had its dirty little hands all over the Jerusalem massacre which has fallen off the pages of every media outlet in the world.
Asked whether the US wanted Egypt to act as an intermediary in indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, Ms Perino said: “The president wants their participation and their co-operation ... And I think you saw last week after secretary [of state Condoleezza] Rice’s trip, both to Egypt and to the Palestinian territories in Israel [sic], that they tried to reach out and are trying to do a little bit more with Hamas.
In other words, Hamas is proving to the world of terrorists that aggression, murder and massacre work. If you are a terrorist and want to get your way, attack your foes relentlessly and even the mighty United States of America will start talking with you.

US support for Egypt hints at shift on Hamas
The US on Wednesday said it hoped that Egypt could convince Hamas to stop its attacks on Israel, in an apparent shift in Washington’s policy on isolating the Islamist militant group.
U.S. officials have been increasingly concerned that an escalation of violence in Gaza could spiral out of control and deal a devastating blow to the faltering Israeli-Palestinian peace process launched last year at the Annapolis conference hosted by the US administration.
The US has consistently ruled out any suggestion that it might endorse indirect talks between Israel and Hamas. Israeli officials have also insisted in recent days that there are no direct or indirect talks with Hamas. At the same time, they have welcomed Egypt’s diplomatic initiative.
Violence has decreased sharply since last week but the lull was disrupted on Wednesday when Israeli security forces killed four Palestinians in Bethlehem. The Israeli army said the four men were “terrorists”.
