Breaking: Top Saudi Cleric Was Targeted For Killing

This is ground-shaking news. The highest islamic "religious" cleric in Saudi Arabia, Grand Mufti Sheik Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheik, was the target of an assasination plan that was discovered when a militant islamic cell was discovered. Apparently, the cell was also targeting the head of Saudi Arabia's Supreme Council of Clerics.

Now, if you read between the lines here, the "militant islamic cell" HAS to mean al Qaeda. Back in 2004 when al Qaeda linked terrorists did the bombings in Riyadh, the Grand Mufti came out strongly against the attacks and threw his total support behind the Saud rulers.

I'll update this as more of the details come out. Right now it's sketchy and the full report is below from YNET.

Report: Militant cell planned to assassinate top Saudi clerics

A recently uncovered cell of Islamic militants planned to kill Saudi Arabia's grand mufti and another top cleric, reported the daily Okaz Thursday.

Quoting an unnamed security official, the paper reported that the 24-member militant cell planned to assassinate Grand Mufti Sheik Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheik, the country's highest religious authority, and Sheik Saleh Al Fawzan of the Supreme Council of Clerics. (AP)
