Egyptian Prosecutors Ban Media Coverage of Investigation of Christian Church Bombing That Killed 23

How predictable, I guess. Today, Egypt's general prosecutor put a ban on any media coverage of the investigation going on regarding the terror bombing of the Christian church in Alexandria, Egypt back on New Year's Day. In that bombing, 23 people were killed and 97 wounded when a car bomb was set off outside of the church. The bombing spurred protests by Coptic Christians all over Egypt - reminding the world that there persecution continues each and every day.

From the article on today's decision from Reuters via Breitbart:

Egypt's general prosecutor on Monday banned media reporting of the investigation into a deadly New Year's Day church bombing, saying any revelations could hinder the work of investigators.

Twenty-three people were killed and 97 wounded in the blast outside the church in Alexandria, which prompted protests by Christians that the state had not done enough to protect them.

The ban is to "ensure the investigation procedures are not revealed and to protect the evidence from getting affected by what could be published in different media outlets," General Prosecutor Abdel Maguid Mahmoud said in a statement.

The ban comes a day after Egypt's government accused a Palestinian militant group, the Army of Islam, of carrying out the bombing with the help of a local accomplice. A spokesman for the Army of Islam, which considers al Qaeda's leaders as spiritual mentors, said it had no connection to the Alexandria attack, although it praised those who carried it out.

Here's my take on what is going on - Egypt is already covering things up here with this claim that the Army of Islam is responsible - I don't believe that for a moment. And here's why:

  • The Army of Islam is a nobody in the scheme of islamic terror in the Middle East
  • The Egyptians find it convenient to name a group OUTSIDE of Egypt as the culprit - and of course, every Arab nation scorns the misfit Palestinians anyway
  • The Egyptians are going to find out that there is evidence in this bombing that links it to the Muslim Brotherhood and they do not want that to get out, publicly

I have blogged here about what appears to me to be a concerted effort in the Middle East against Christians and since it is going on in several countries at the same time, for me to believe that a small gang of ragtag jihadis like the Army of Islam pulled this off is ludicrous. This persecution and attack on Christians is organized, in my mind - it is setting something up that will turn out to be ominous and the Egyptians might just find some clues to what is going on. Now, will they share that intel with the rest of the world? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
