Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb Claims 9 French Commandos Were Killed In Raid On Al Qaeda Camp

According to the report over at Threat Matrix, the islamic terrorists of al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb are making the claim that when French and Mauritania forces raided an al Qaeda camp in northern Mali. From the article:

Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb's latest press release has claimed that the group killed nine French special force commandos from the General Directorate for External Security, or DGSE, during a joint Mauritanian-French raid on an AQIM camp in northern Mali. The raid was bold attempt to free a French national, Michel Germaneau. With the controversial aftermath of the raid and Michel Germaneau’s subsequent execution, a propaganda war of details of the incident have ensued with AQIM asserting that 54 French commandos were involved in the assault, contradicting early reports of 20-30 French advisers with no reports of casualties. AQIM listed the names of the French commandos supposedly killed in the assault.

As the article states, the kidnapped Frenchman, Germaneau, was confirmed executed so it seems to me that the al Qaeda claim may have some validity - it will be interesting to see if any new updates come out of the French foreign ministry now.

I have to say, I was encouraged to see the French taking this proactive approach to the kidnapping and obviously, they had good enough intel to get close - one has to wonder what might have gone so wrong with this operation considering they had to have had a helluva surprise element to the raid.

They tried to free the French hostages. Operation of French special forces failed miserably. The French did not manage to free any prisoner. During the attack 9 French soldier "were missing in action", i.e., were killed.
