IDF and Shin Bet Foil Hamas Attempt At Kidnapping IDF Soldier

Back in December of 2009, Hamas sent operatives into Israel to attempt the abduction of an IDF soldier in hopes that they could create an even better bargaining position for prisoner releases but fortunately, the attempt was foiled by the IDF and Israeli Intelligence and Security organization, Shin Bet.

From the article at the Jerusalem Post:

The IDF and Shin Bet successfully foiled a Hamas attempt in December to kidnap an IDF soldier and infiltrate two bombs into Israel from Egypt, underscoring the importance of the government’s recent decision to erect a fence along the porous Egyptian border.Five Hamas men were arrested on December 12, 2009 while trying to cross into Israel from the Sinai Peninsula. They were found to be carrying a gun, a silencer and $15,000 in counterfeit bills, the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) announced Thursday. The Shin Bet recently revealed that a number of infiltration attempts via the Egyptian border had been foiled in 2009.During the arrest, two of the operatives were wounded. The attack was planned by Rahad Said, a senior commander in the group’s military wing in Gaza, a defense source said.
As for what these Hamas operatives were supposed to accomplish, it was two-fold:

In his interrogation, Salaman Abu Atik, a 43-year-old senior Hamas member specializing in weapons smuggling, confessed to having infiltrated Israel at the behest of Hamas’s military wing to carry out a terror attack and kidnap an IDF soldier.Hamas had reportedly hoped that the kidnapped soldier would serve as a bargaining chip in another prisoner exchange with Israel alongside Gilad Schalit.
The Israeli people are truly blessed by the likes of Shin Bet and how absolutely in touch they are with any types of possibile infiltrations into the homeland. Add to that the precision of the IDF in making the arrests and subequently seeing that interrogations brought the truth out.

And when you hear of this, one cannot consider the Israeli mindset in trying to negotiate the release of Gilad Shalit. At the VERY SAME TIME that the Israelis and Hamas were reported to be close to a "deal" for the release of Gilad Shalit, that very same Hamas leadership was planning this second abduction.

This is very hard for me to confess, folks...many of you have seen my memorial on the sidebar here about remembering Gilad Shalit and how I have adamantly voiced my opinion that the Israelis need to do everything possible to get Gilad home - even if it is a horrendous release of many Pali prisoners. But now, after hearing this, and with a saddened heart...I cannot help but realize that Gilad probably will never come home. Hamas are not terrorists, they are not Palestinians, they are simply minions of Satan - they are the evil of this world loosed by Lucifer. It is my feeling now that Israel must take any chance to forcibly get Gilad Shalit back, even if the risks are high. I realize it's easy for me to take this position from where I am but I'm sorry, Hamas needs to pay dearly for the abduction of Gilad Shalit and this second attempt. There needs to be an example set that will be so severe, so intoxicatingly grotesque that Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Fatah, and even Hezbollah to the north will never, ever again consider abducting an IDF soldier. Simple as that.

Hamas must be destroyed - not beaten down, not taught a lesson...no, they need to be wiped from the map and erased from history. That would be my "deal" for Hamas.

IDF foils plan to kidnap soldier

Atik told his interrogators that another Hamas activist, Ibrahim Za’arah, was planning to enter Israel to carry out an attack. The two had met in the Sinai after crossing into Egypt through a tunnel along the Philadelphi Corridor and decided to join forces. Based on the intelligence information provided by Atik, Za’arah, 44, was arrested on December 31 carrying two explosive devices weighing 6-7 kilograms, as well as detonation devices.Za’arah confessed that he planned to plant the bombs in heavily populated areas, telling interrogators he was ordered to carry out the attack within 10 days after entering Israel. He also admitted that he entered the country in order to assist Atik in kidnapping and murdering an IDF soldier.
