Over 2 dozen insurgents killed in S Afghanistan

KABUL, Sept. 15 (Xinhua) -- Over two dozen Taliban insurgents have been killed in militants' former stronghold Kandahar of southern Afghanistan, deputy to provincial police chief Mohammad Shah Khan said Tuesday.
"Afghan and international troops launched a joint operation against Taliban insurgents in Jalai district on Monday, during which 27 rebels have been killed," Khan told Xinhua.
These insurgents, he added, were eliminated when aircrafts targeted their hideouts.
There were no casualties on Afghan and international troops, the official contended.
Khan also noted that several villages had been recaptured during the operation.
Meanwhile, Qari Yusuf Ahmadi, who claims to speak for Taliban outfit in talks with media via telephone from an unknown location, confirmed the battle, but he said only four insurgents had been killed.
Kandahar and the neighboring provinces of Zabul, Helmand and Uruzgan, known as the hotbed to Taliban militants, have been the scene of violent incidents since the beginning of this year.
Militants, just couple of weeks ago by carrying out a series of bomb blasts, left 43 dead and over 60 others injured in Kandahar city.
