Barack Obama apparently has taken time out of his busy schedule to attend the John Kerry School of Flip Flopping and today announced that he would oppose the publication of photos of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan that supposedly show abuse of those prisoners by U.S. military personnel. Obama now cites that it could endanger our troops to have theses photos published but of course, just a few weeks ago Obama had no concern for our troops anywhere in his little head. Of course, we can trace all of this bullshit back to the ACLU - you know, those clowns that have forgotten what the first initial in their organization's name is...."American"....as they are apparently only concerned about foreigners and terrorists. Anyway, here's some of the details of Obama's new stance on this subject from the article at the Los Angeles Times:
Let's be clear on one thing. The ACLU is an enemy of America, we all know that. But the part that is hard to swallow folks, is your President hates his military...he doesn't hate war...he hates that America has the edge in war. I ask the military people of this country a question - how can you stomach this Commander in Chief?
The Obama administration changed direction today, announcing that it would oppose the release of photographs showing the alleged abuse of prisoners in Iraq and Afghanistan. The administration this month had agreed to release dozens of the photographs but reversed course after top military officials said they were concerned that the photos could put U.S. troops in jeopardy, particularly in Afghanistan.Okay, did you see that quote from Obama? He said the photos were NOT "sensational." Well, grab one of the cupie doll prizes off the top shelf for Herr Leader! He actually might get it? The reason the photos aren't sensational is because the damn prisoners WERE NOT ABUSED! The ACLU doesn't give a shit if those prisoners were abused or not...all they are about is their supposed "transparency"....the ACLU is all about control and outting "The Man." This is war. We are at war in Afghanistan and Iraq..and the ACLU thinks we are looking at a civil case in Lincoln, Nebraska. And we have a President whose first reaction, his true feelings, was to release the photos to do two things: 1. Focus some blame on George W. Bush 2. Embarass the military. Only when a bunch of Generals got in Obama's face did he decide to change his mind.
The president said publication of the photos would serve no purpose and could endanger U.S. troops. The photos are not "sensational," Obama said.
The reversal was criticized by the American Civil Liberties Union."The decision to not release the photographs makes a mockery of President Obama's promise of transparency and accountability," ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said. "It is essential that these photographs be released so that the public can examine for itself the full scale and scope of prisoner abuse that was conducted in its name."

In an about-face, White House opposes release of alleged prisoner abuse photos
"Any abuse of detainees is unacceptable. It is against our values. It endangers our security. It will not be tolerated," Obama said. The reversal was criticized by the American Civil Liberties Union."The decision to not release the photographs makes a mockery of President Obama's promise of transparency and accountability," ACLU attorney Amrit Singh said. "It is essential that these photographs be released so that the public can examine for itself the full scale and scope of prisoner abuse that was conducted in its name."The photos pose a politically difficult situation for Obama, coming as the president's more liberal supporters are seeking further investigation of how the Bush administration interrogated detainees in Afghanistan and Iraq. Former Vice President Dick Cheney has been pushing back in recent television interviews, accusing the Obama administration of having compromised U.S. security by releasing the "torture memos," relating to how prisoners were questioned. The pictures in dispute show the alleged abuse of detainees at various locations. Pictures of abuse at the U.S.-run Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq already have been made public.Citing the Freedom of Information Act, the ACLU successfully sued for the release of the photos. After the rulings, the Justice Department agreed that further appeal would probably fail. But today, Gibbs said the Obama administration would pursue a different argument in any appeal. Obama believes that the national security implications of a release have not been fully presented, Gibbs said.Military leaders, including Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates and commanders in Iraq and Afghanistan, opposed the release, fearing growing anger in the Muslim world.

Plausible
Deniability
I applaud the president on this move.
What good would release of the photos do to anybody? The troops would be punished and our reputation would take a serious hit. These photos would be degrading to the people of the Middle East where most of these prisoners hailed from. It would have been a lose-lose situation.
This is one of the first moves where I support the president 100%.
Ryan
Gotta give BO credit on this one. I guess he can't be wrong 100% of the time.
How to keep putting out a message that "America is bad?"... hmmmm...
Let's talk about really graphic torture photos for a few days. That should get great press about Ameica being torturers. Then, let's say the photos are sooo graphic that we cannot release them. That should really get the "America bad" theme going. Then let's get our allies, the ACLU, to bring a court case, again keeping it in the news. We could keep this meme percolating for years, and just keep painting the picture for everyone - "America is bad".

No news. No change. No motion. No substance. But the PR campaign ensures that America is harmed.
Ye again, the 0-hole figures out a way to damage America.
So, release the photos - bad (endangering our troops), don't release the photos - bad (flip flopper). John Kerry was a loser who inspired no one. Obama won.
I'm just glad we have a president who is willing to reconsider and change when he makes a bad call. Maybe if Bush would have done the same instead of repeating "stay the course" over and over we would be in a better position in Afghanistan today. Maybe if Bush had ever questioned his own decisions the foolish diversion that is the Iraq War could have been avoided. What could we do with 150,000 more troops on the Afghan/Pakistan front?
I may be wrong but I would wager that Obama got more military votes than McCain. Anyone have the FACTS on that? Not that it matters - the military does not pick the president, this ain't Turkey.
Its funny how so many people are crying about Obama taking away their constitutional rights and yet those same people despise the ACLU, a first amendment watchdog. I completely disagree with many people that the ACLU has defended over the years(such as the KKK), but I support their right to express their ignorance. This is America - places like Cuba, China, and Russia have no such civil liberties watchdogs.
God bless the ACLU.
When the Nazis were bombing London Winston Churchill did not allow German POWs to be tortured because torture is wrong. Is Al - Qaeda worse than the Nazis? Only in their dreams. I remember during the propaganda campaign leading up to the Iraq War Bush going on TV talking about the torture and abuses going on at Abu Graib as one of the reasons Saddam had to go. Sometimes irony is a bitch.
A quick search yields that Obama got 44% of the veterans vote (says Politico)- can't find an accurate count of active duty votes. I'd bet its higher.
Ryan and Jeff,
Of course this was the right decision but my post here is all about the fact that Obama DID NOT make the right decision - he had his arm broken in four places and MADE to change his mind. His decision was to publish these photos and there's no way in hell I'm gonna applaud this scum bag for not changing his mind, just changing his semantics.

Esquerita,
You consistently come here and chime away about how popular Obama is with the military, how he got more military and veteran votes and yet you NEVER provide a link. You're wrong and you know it but hey, if you want to keep banging the drum, go right ahead - but no one here is buying the tripe.
Tell you what Esquerita...i'll give you an assignment. Go to the following blogs and in their comments ask how many of the Vets there voted for Obama and then report back here what percentage voted for The One, okay? Blogs to visit:

If I could find a link I'd post one - I figured it was something a google search would turn up in two seconds but I guess not. No one else has provided a link yet. I said I may be wrong - but I'm willing to wager that Obama got more than half of the active duty votes. I'm not interested in asking people on a handful of blogs who they voted for - I want the fact.
The blogoshere represents a small number of people compared to the public at large. Not only that, but blogs represent every conceivable wavelength in the political spectrum, you could find a straw poll to back up anything if you know what blog to ask the question on.
I'm just guessing that since Obama got most of the under 40 vote, most of the military is made up of people under 40... If Obama got 44% of the veteran vote, the active duty vote may be 50% or more.
Its late and I'm tired, maybe this weekend I'll try to find out. I don't know though - I have LOTS of beans, squash, and tomatoes to finish planting.
If I don't get a chance to log on tomorrow have a good weekend Holger.
Rita,
Isn't it funny how there was a press release recently about how fully 1/4 of the absentee ballots of the military aren't counted anyway. Trust me on this the military voted more for McCain than Obama, for the simple fact that he, while a Senator, voted against funding the troops. The military remembers what happened to them under both Carter and Clinton, as they were seriously defunded. They know that the same will happen under this twit.
The fact that 1 in 4 military votes went uncounted is a travesty - but I would not suggest that either political party is responsible. It seems this happens over and over again no matter who is president.
You may be right Shark - but I'd love to see the actual results, just curious. I know troops donated to the Obama camp 6 to 1 over McCain. Hell, Ron Paul got more military donations than McCain.
