70 Taliban Killed In Attack On Outpost In Khost, Afghanistan

The Taliban keep targeting NATO and U.S. outposts along the border with Pakistan and in this case, they got their asses handed to 'em, major. Reports are that 50 to 70 Taliban were killed in this latest outpost attack that happened in Khost. Let's look at the details from the report over at The Long War Journal:

The Taliban continue to attack outposts and district centers in the Afghan provinces along the Pakistani border. Today, the Taliban force assaulted a district center in Khost, and suffered massive casualties, according to the provincial governor. Upwards of 70 Taliban fighters were reported killed in the nighttime battle.
The Taliban launched their assault on the Spera district center at 2 AM local time, the International Security Assistance Force reported in a press release. The attacking force, estimated at 100 Taliban fighters, attacked using small arms and machineguns.
The Afghan National Police manning the outpost held of the attack and radioed US forces for backup. The US responded by sending ground forces and supporting fires from artillery as well as helicopter and aircraft.
US and Afghan forces then surrounded the Taliban force, and pounded the position with small-arms fire, artillery, and air strikes.

Did you get that? 100 Taliban staged this attack and 70 are left searching the fires of hell for some 72 virgins - and my guess is that the 30% that survived are not in good shape. What the Taliban have found out in these attacks on the outposts is that looks are deceiving. This was an outpost manned mostly by Afghan police and security forces but as soon as the Afghans made the call, the Taliban found themselves facing U.S. troops, heliccopters and aircraft.

The Taliban continue to underestimate the speed in which NATO and U.S. forces can respond to these attacks and as in this case, the losses for the Taliban are huge. Good, good news.

At the same time, it is apparent that the Taliban just aren't going to give up on this strategy of trying to dismantle these outposts along the Pakistan border. I'm sure the Taliban want more success stories to spread around but I think their strategy is really two fold: 1) If they keep attacking these forward bases, it will put NATO on the defensive and cut back on any NATO/U.S. attacks inside of Pakistan and 2) The Taliban needs more of a cushion - they are vulnerable in large numbers as they cross into Afghanistan with these bases so close.

Either way, 70 dead Taliban is a wonderful way to end the weekend.

US, Afghan forces beat back Taliban attack in Khost province

The Taliban force was routed. "The number of insurgents killed is in double-digit figures," the International Security Assistance Force reported. Arsala Jamal, the governor of Khost, said between 50 and 70 Taliban fighters were killed. "A small number" of police officers were reported killed. No US troops were reported killed or wounded during the engagement.
The Spera district center is just nine miles from the Pakistani border. The Taliban-controlled tribal agency of North Waziristan, which is run by the Haqqani family, borders Khost. The US military has singled out the Haqqanis as a major threat in eastern Afghanistan. Siraj Haqqani is one of the most wanted men in the region because of his close links with Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda.
The Taliban, al Qaeda, and allied terror groups based in Pakistan have launched numerous attacks on US and Afghan outposts in the provinces of Zabul, Paktika, Paktia, Khost, Kunar, Nangarhar, and Nuristan along the Pakistani border. US and Afghan forces have repelled every Taliban attack, often inflicting heavy casualties. The Taliban and al Qaeda were able to kill nine US soldiers during an attack on an outpost in Nuristan. US forces later abandoned the outpost, and the Taliban took control of the town.

These high casualty counts are good, but similar to early days in Vietnam. They attack, we kill them, they retreat to sanctuary, they return another day, American public is confused by the lack of strategic victory. Looks like we need to be more agressive in Pakistan. How about a vigorous air campaign in Waziristan?

federale,

no question that you are right about Pakistan - daily air strikes in the Northwest Frontier provinces would quiet Afghanistan down fast.

First order of business...take Mehsud out.

Federale, Holger,

This is great news for today, air strikes in the wazirstan and serious pounding on those crossing will help us tomorrow, we need to eradicate the madrassas so that they dont produce a new crop in another year or five. You have bombings in Mosul, Baghdad, Kabul, India just freaking today!! We need to attack the root cause or we will be fighting these assholes for the next hundred years.

shark,

yes, you are right but at the same time, prophecy probably substantiates that it will be a war until the end of time. I can think of over 2 dozen countries that the West could justifiably be at war with right now on the grounds of harboring, promoting or aiding terror.

We need the resolve and grit of our forefathers...

"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen."
Samuel Adams, August 1, 1776
