Australia Waves The White Flag, Pulls Troops Out of Iraq

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made good on his campaign promise and officially has surrendered to al Qaeda in Iraq and is pulling all Australian troops out of Iraq. Here's the story here at Yahoo News:

About 500 Australian combat troops pulled out of their base in southern Iraq on Sunday, fulfilling an election promise by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to bring the soldiers home this year.
A British military spokesman in the southern city of Basra said the pullout from Talil base in Nassiriya was under way, but a spokesman for the governor of Dhi Qar province said it had been completed, with U.S. forces replacing the Australians.
"The Australian battle group is pulling out," the British military spokesman said.

Now, there's another line in this article that I want to put up:

Rudd, who won elections last November, had promised to bring home frontline troops this year. Polls show 80 percent of Australians oppose the war.

So, I ask you...if 80 percent of the Aussie people oppose this war, and now their troops are out, where's the celebration in Australia? You don't see any and you won't see any, because there's an air of humiliation and embarassment over this once proud country today. I will be the first one to thank the Australians for their being the FIRST Coalition member to join in the Iraq War and I am also quick to point out the tradition of bravery in many world wars and conflicts by the fighting men and women of Australia, but I must now say I am thoroughly shocked, disappointed and pissed as hell at these people. On this day, the proud history of Australian armed forces is overshadowed by this surrender to the rag-headed, sandal wearing, child killing jihadists of al Qaeda.

Australia has given in to the terrorists of this world. The Aussies, in my view, have shown they are nothing more than a mini-Europe with their own version of dhimmification and submission. Rudd, you have taken a proud people and reduced them to the servants of the golden calf. And Rudd, in case you didn't know it, you have just opened up your country to a jihadist attack plan you have never seen - G_d save your soul.

Australian troops pull out of Iraq

NASSIRIYA, Iraq (Reuters) - About 500 Australian combat troops pulled out of their base in southern Iraq on Sunday, fulfilling an election promise by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to bring the soldiers home this year.

Australia, a staunch U.S. ally, was one of the first countries to commit troops to the Iraq war. In addition to the combat troops, it also deployed aircraft and warships to the Gulf to protect Iraq's offshore oil platforms.
Since handing over security of Dhi Qar province to the Iraqis, the main role of the Australian battle group, numbering about 515 soldiers, has been to train and support Iraqi forces.
Rudd, who won elections last November, had promised to bring home frontline troops this year. Polls show 80 percent of Australians oppose the war.
Australia's top military commander, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, said in February that after the troops pulled out, Australia would leave behind two maritime surveillance aircraft and a warship helping patrol the oil platforms, as well as a small force of security and headquarters liaison troops.
The British military spokesman said Australian civilians training the police and advising the Iraqi government would also stay behind.

I was especially interested in the comment by the Australian Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson, that Al Quaeda in Iraq were now on the verge of defeat. I wonder if anyone bothered to point out to him that there was no Al Quaeda in Iraq before the invasion. Effectively he is justifying the Australian commitment by saying that if we hadn't been there then the situation would have been almost as good as when we weren't there???
