IS fighter executes mother for asking him to leave group BEIRUT: A member of the militant Islamic State (IS) group killed his mother in a public square in the Syrian city of Raqa, a monitor said on Friday. Ali Saqr, 20, reported his mother, Lina, to IS authorities in Raqa “because she tried to persuade him to leave IS and flee the city”, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The authorities subsequently arrested the woman and accused her of apostasy, the monitoring group said. On Wednesday, she was shot to death by her son “in front of hundreds of people close to the mail service building in Raqa city”, the Observatory said. Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said the woman, who was in her forties, was living in the nearby town of Tabaqa but worked in Raqa city. The incident was widely condemned online by social media users. Raqa is the de facto Syrian capital of IS’s so-called “caliphate”, the territories it controls in Syria and Iraq where it imposes its harsh interpretations of Islamic law. Among the crimes that warrant a death sentence in IS territories are homosexuality and adultery, according to the Observatory. Other acts punishable by death range from blocking roads to “betraying Muslims” and working with anti-IS groups including the “crusader” US-led coalition. Even capturing and torturing an anti-IS activist or fighter without proper authorisation from the authorities could be met with a death sentence. But in IS-held territories, using child soldiers and “owning slaves” are both legal. The extremist group has been accused of carrying out mass killings, torture, rape and sexual slavery. A US-led coalition has been striking the militants in Syria and Iraq for over a year. More than 260,000 people have been killed in Syria’s war since it erupted in March 2011.

Hezbollah responds to Israeli assassination of commander Two weeks after the assassination of its notorious member Samir Quntar, Hezbollah finally carried out its repeated threats to retaliate against Israel. At 3:15 PM on Jan. 4, Hezbollah targeted an Israeli military patrol with an IED attack across the Blue Line on the Zabadeen-Kafra road in the Shebaa Farms. Hezbollah quickly claimed responsibility, saying its “Martyr Samir Quntar Group” carried out the attack. The group’s statement alleged that the explosive had damaged one Israeli Humvee and completely destroyed another, killing its four occupants. A “security source” told Hezbollah’s Al-Manar that the destroyed vehicle was carrying a high-ranking Israeli officer. However, Israeli sources said that the attack targeted two heavy-armored vehicles (one of which was a D-9 bulldozer), not a Humvee, and did not result in any Israeli casualties. Israel, which had been shelling the Lebanese border for days to deter a Hezbollah attack, responded by shelling Hezbollah locations in south Lebanon, in the vicinity of Kfar Shouba, Al-Abbassiyeh, Bastra, Maheediyeh and al-Wazaniyeh. But, within two hours the entire event was over. Even Hezbollah’s Al-Manar almost immediately went back to reporting on incidents involving local soccer teams. Over the course of these last two weeks, Israel and Hezbollah have been trading threats and warnings, giving a deceptive impression that a large-scale attack was being planned. In the end, the attack amounted to very little and followed the pattern of Hezbollah’s recent attacks on Israeli targets. Hezbollah has been at war with Israel since the group’s inception in 1983. The first phase of that conflict was an all-out war between the two sides. It began while Israel was occupying Lebanese territory up to Beirut after its 1982 invasion. It continued after Israel withdrew its forces in 1985 to a 328-square-mile “security zone” of Lebanese territory along the border, and ended after Israel withdrew its forces from Lebanon on May 24, 2000. The second phase began in October of that year, and became known as the so-called Shebaa Farms Conflict (2000-2006), lasting until June of 2006. Under the pretext that Israel was still holding an 8-square-mile area known as Shebaa Farms, which it claimed were occupied Lebanese land (Israel occupied the Farms during the Six Day War in 1967 during its Golan Heights offensive and asserts they are Syrian), Hezbollah initiated a low-level conflict against the IDF. The group’s attacks were confined to the Shebaa Farms and mostly avoided civilian targets or attacks within internationally recognized Israeli territory. The point was to harass the Israelis with rocket and mortar attacks, to keep the conflict on a simmer but not lead to an all-out war. Hezbollah’s “rules” for this conflict were simple, and in line with its principles of warfare: Hurt Israel and then stop before it abandons restraint. The Israelis acted in a similar manner, confining their attacks on Hezbollah to assassinations, limited airstrikes and artillery shelling. Since Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, Hezbollah broke from that pattern once: on July 12, 2006, when it carried out the attack that precipitated the Second Lebanon War, by shelling pre-1967 northern Israel, and kidnapping two Israeli soldiers and killing three others in a cross-border raid. Hezbollah would later admit that it regretted carrying out the operation. After the 2006 war, hostilities ceased along the border between the two sides until Hezbollah intervened in the Syrian Civil War, when Israel began carrying out strikes against Hezbollah targets in order to prevent it from acquiring “game changing weapons.” Ever since, Hezbollah and Israel have been engaged in a low-level conflict according to the “Shebaa Rules.” While Hezbollah and Israel remain dedicated to each other’s destruction, for the time being, both sides want to strike at each other, while avoiding a full war. Hezbollah is under domestic pressure over its involvement in Syria. It wants to maintain its veneer of “resistance” against Israel and deter the Israelis from continuing to attack its assets in Syria without entering a full-blown war with the IDF. Despite Hezbollah’s rhetoric, however, with its forces fully invested in saving Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime – an existential matter for the group – and having lost one-tenth of its fighting force, it simply can’t afford one. Hezbollah is also exploiting its presence in Syria to lay the groundwork for turning the Golan Heights into an additional front against Israel. A miscalculation could cause it to lose all of its gains, in Lebanon and in Syria. Israel is also not interested in a war because of its concern over its ability to cope with Hezbollah’s vast arsenal of rockets and missiles, which can now reach any point in the Jewish State. So, in order to ensure that their attacks have predictable outcomes, both sides are attacking each other in accordance with the Shebaa Rules, allowing them to strike at each other while avoiding a large-scale war that neither side currently wants. That is not to say that Israel and Hezbollah will not engage in an overt war in the future. Mistakes and miscalculations, like in 2006, can happen again. Leaving that aside, a war between the Jewish State and the Party of God is inevitable, but not on the horizon, even if the IDF’s suspicions that Hezbollah carried out the attack to learn Israel’s responses prove to be true. Hezbollah’s response to Quntar’s assassination demonstrated that. Its limited attack was meant to lay Quntar’s assassination to rest, explaining its inflated claims regarding Israeli casualties. Israel’s response was equally limited. What both sides were signaling was a return to the routine.
12,000 Syrian refugees amass at Jordan border AMMAN: Jordan has acknowledged that more than 12,000 Syrian refugees have amassed at its border, awaiting entry. The confirmation by government spokesman Mohammed Momani comes after Jordan initially dismissed a similar estimate provided by the UN refugee agency as exaggerated. Momani told Associated Press on Tuesday that "the number is 12,000, but it is increasing." The refugees are stranded in a remote desert area on the Syrian-Jordanian border, often spending weeks or months there in what aid agencies say are deteriorating humanitarian conditions. In December, the UN refugee agency urged Jordan to allow the refugees to enter. Momani says about 50 to 100 refugees are permitted entry each day, with priority given to women, children, the elderly and sick people. He says mass entry is unlikely because of security concerns.

Islamic State’s Libyan ‘province’ launches new offensive The Islamic State’s so-called “province” in Libya has launched a new offensive and claims to have captured a town on the Mediterranean coast. “The soldiers of the Khilafah [caliphate] managed to take complete control over the coastal city of Bin Jawad,” the Islamic State’s Wilayat Barqat (or province) said in a short statement released online earlier today. The “blessed operations come during the battle of Sheikh Abdul Mugirah al Qahtani (May Allah accept him), and all praise is due to Allah, master of the universe,” the statement continued. In a concurrent operation, the “caliphate’s” fighters attacked the port town of Al Sidr, which is approximately 20 miles away from Bin Jawad and home to one of Libya’s largest oil ports. One or more suicide bombers may have initiated the assault after they struck guard positions with car bombs. Photos posted on social media appear to show the wreckage caused by their blasts, but the images have not yet been verified. The status of the fighting in Al Sidr is also not clear as of this writing. Separately, the jihadists set fire to a storage tank at an oil facility in Ras Lanuf, another port that houses an oil refinery. Libya’s rival factions have long fought over access to Ras Lanuf. Bin Jawad, Al Sidr and Ras Lanuf are all in the district of Sirte. The Islamic State’s Libyan arm took over much of the city of Sirte last year, turning it into an operational hub. Bin Jawad is also a short drive from the town of Nawfaliyah, which the “caliphate’s” men overran in March 2015. As in Iraq and Syria, the “caliphate” seeks to control key Libyan oil fields, refineries, ports and other facilities. It remains to be seen if today’s attacks, which are testing local security forces, lead to further advances. Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s followers in Libya have named their new offensive after Sheikh Abdul Mugirah al Qahtani, who was identified in an issue of Dabiq magazine released last September as the head of the Islamic State’s province in the country. [See LWJ report, In Dabiq magazine, Islamic State complains about jihadist rivals in Libya.] In his interview with Dabiq, Qahtani complained bitterly about the Islamic State’s jihadist rivals in Libya, including the leaders of Ansar al Sharia. Qahtani said Ansar al Sharia’s leaders are close to their counterparts in Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), which opposes the Islamic State’s expansion in North Africa. Qahtani promised that the “caliphate’s” opponents “will continue to be a target for our swords, which we will not hold back until they repent.” Qahtani’s true identity has always been murky, as he was not clearly identified in the Islamic State’s propaganda. CNN reported in November 2014 that an Islamic State leader known as Abu Nabil al Anbari, a jihadist “veteran” who was imprisoned with Baghdadi in Iraq, had been dispatched to Libya to oversee the group’s efforts. The Wall Street Journal offered a similar account, saying that Anbari was an ex-Iraqi policeman. The Defense Department announced in November 2015 that Anbari was killed in a US airstrike in Libya. Anbari (also known as Wissam Najm Abd Zayd al Zubaydi) “may have been the spokesman in” an Islamic State video showing the execution of Coptic Christians in February 2015, according to the Pentagon. Anbari’s “death will degrade [the Islamic State’s] ability to meet the group’s objectives in Libya,” Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook claimed at the time. Cook said the organization’s objectives include “recruiting new…members, establishing bases in Libya, and planning external attacks on the United States.” In December 2015, the Pentagon claimed to confirm Anbari’s death, describing him as “a longtime al Qaeda operative and the senior [Islamic State] leader in Libya.” The airstrike that purportedly killed him was the first US “strike against an [Islamic State] leader in Libya.” It is possible that Abdul Mugirah al Qahtani and Abu Nabil al Anbari were the same Islamic State official, but that has not been confirmed. Their aliases indicate different countries of origin (Anbari refers to Iraq, while Qahtani is generally used by jihadists from the Arabian Peninsula), but the jihadists often adopt new pseudonyms for various reasons. Regardless, the Islamic State, like al Qaeda, has proven to be adept at replacing fallen leaders. And Qahtani’s death did not stop the jihadists’ latest advances on Libya’s coast.

This is something I’ve never experienced,” said one 22-year old victim. “When we called for help, they laughed.” Bags and valuables had “been robbed.” And one 17-year-old is quoted as saying: “I had fingers on every orifice”….. here It sounds just like Tahrir Square in Egypt, when “freedom movement” revelers were sexually attacking any woman that dare venture out. Death toll in Indian airbase attack rises to 7 troops, 4 gunmen PATHANKOT: The number of troops killed in an attack on an Indian air force base rose to seven on Sunday, after four soldiers succumbed to injuries sustained in the hourslong gunbattle near the border with Pakistan and another died after being wounded in an explosion, officials said. Four suspected militants were killed in the fighting on Saturday. Gunfire and blasts were heard a second consecutive day on Sunday, and Indian TV channels reported two gunmen were still at large in the sprawling facility. News channels cited police in northwestern Punjab as saying the two gunmen were still holed up in the Pathankot air base, more than a day after the pre-dawn raid in which four attackers and two Indian military personnel were killed. A home ministry official said several blasts had been heard in the facility but could not confirm reports that gunmen were still at large. Air force spokeswoman Rochelle D'Silva said that combing operations to secure the Pathankot air force base were continuing late Sunday morning. Officials gave no other details about the situation at the base. Earlier in the day, at least one grenade blast was heard from inside the base, but officials declined to comment. D'Silva gave no details about the death of an elite commando Sunday morning, except to say that he was seriously wounded in an explosion. News reports said the commando was killed while defusing explosives. A gold medal-winning Indian shooter was among the troops killed. Subedar Fateh Singh won gold and silver medals in the first Commonwealth Shooting Championships held in 1995, the National Rifle Association of India said. The attack by gunmen disguised as soldiers came a week after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an unscheduled visit to Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in an effort to revive talks between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Officials said the attack on the military base, just 25 km (15 miles) from the border with Pakistan, bore the hallmarks of previous suspected assaults by Pakistan-based militant groups, underscoring the fragility of recent efforts to revive bilateral talks between the often uneasy neighbours. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. ‘Voice of the Caliphate’ radio broadcasts anti-Taliban propaganda in Afghanistan The Islamic State’s so-called “province” in the Khorasan (an area covering Afghanistan and Pakistan) has set up a radio station to broadcast anti-Taliban messages and other propaganda. The station is named “Voice of the Caliphate” and it broadcasts on a FM airwave that can be heard in some parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan. The pro-Islamic State segments are usually uploaded via Spreaker, which provides users with an application to create their own “on-demand audio podcasts,” and then distributed online using social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Telegram. Authorities in the Nangarhar province, where the Islamic State’s Khorasan “province” is based, claimed to have jammed the station’s signal earlier this month. But the “Voice of the Caliphate” continues to broadcast its messages and also distribute them online. One Spreaker account viewed by The Long War Journal currently hosts more than 30 audio clips from the radio station. The most recent was recorded on Dec. 30. During one broadcast on December 28, the station recounted a recent battle with the Taliban. The Long War Journal has obtained a translation of the 30 minute program, which originally aired in Pashto. An unknown presenter began the program by claiming that “hundreds” of the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency’s “mercenaries,” acting in the name of the Taliban’s “emirate,” attacked the Islamic State’s mujahideen in the Nazyan District of Nangarhar. The Islamic State has consistently accused the Taliban of being a puppet for Pakistan’s ISI, which is the country’s primary intelligence service. It is a claim that has some truth to it, as the ISI has long backed the Taliban’s operations. The “caliphate’s” men are eager to point the relationship out, because it tarnishes the Taliban’s jihadist credentials. The “Voice of the Caliphate” said the Islamic State’s men put up a “heroic resistance,” fighting off mercenary militias from Pakistan, Iran and Russia. A number of fighters from these groups were “arrested” and “taken hostage.” The Khorasan “province” also reportedly “seized different types of equipment and weapons” from their foes during the battle, according to the broadcast. In recent days, some jihadists who are opposed to the Islamic State have posted images of four men who were decapitated, with their heads displayed on a pile of rocks. The pictures purportedly depict Khorasan “province” fighters who were captured and beheaded by either locals or the Taliban. The Long War Journal has decided not to reproduce the gruesome images. In its Dec. 28 broadcast, the “Voice of the Caliphate’s” radio presenter denied that Abu Bakr al Baghdadi’s followers had been slain in such a fashion. Instead, the deceased were supposedly “refugees” from Lashkar-e Islam, which merged with other jihadist groups to form a new Pakistani Taliban coalition in March. The radio station accused Lashkar-e Islam of having a “security arrangement” with the Afghan government and claimed the “powerful lions of the Islamic State are not so weak that they can be arrested alive by the apostates and then be beheaded by them.” The Islamic State’s radio station blasted Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Mansour, who became the Taliban’s emir in July, saying he is an “apostate” and “juniors” in the Taliban’s ranks shouldn’t “follow the orders of the apostate leaders.” The latter message is consistent with other propaganda disseminated by the Khorasan “province.” The group’s statements, published on social media, regularly call for “junior” members of the Taliban to defect. Thus far, it does not appear that the radio station has garnered many listeners. But it has attracted the attention of Afghan officials. The station not only seeks to undermine the Taliban, but also the Afghan government. And like other propaganda efforts launched by the Islamic State and its “provinces,” it could grow over time.
A Muslim, an Arab Israeli, has committed the first act of Islamic terror in Israel to start 2016 and there are two dead to prove it. Was Tel Aviv shooting first ISIS terror attack on Israel? Police are investigating if a shooting which left two dead in a bar in Israel was the first terror attack inspired by ISIS on the country as officers hunt the gunman. The gunman entered a grocery store in central Tel Aviv, pulled out a gun and opened fire on customers at a nearby restaurant, leaving two dead and at least seven others seriously wounded. The suspect is believed to be a 29-year-old Arab Israeli man, possibly from Wadi Ara in the district of Haifa. His father identified him after watching the CCTV footage and contacted the police. Yesterday a tweet was posted warning of an attack on the street in Tel Aviv. The tweet claimed to be representing ISIS although the jihadi group have not claimed official responsibility for the attack. The attack took place at a downtown bar Simta on the city's Dizengoff Street with witnesses describing how the shooter smiles as he sprayed bullets into the packed bar. The first victim has been named as 26-year-old Alon Bekel, manager of the bar where the attack occurred. The Israeli police are hunting for the lone gunmen, who was reportedly identified by his father after watching the CCTV footage. The gunman's weapon was later found dumped inside a green rubbish bin after he fled the scene. 'All possible angles are being investigated.Large-scale police forces are conducting searches for him, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said. The shooting comes amid a recent wave of Palestinian attacks on Israelis and just days after ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi threatened the Jewish state with violence. Nati Shakked, owner of the Simta bar on Dizengoff Street, which was hit by gunfire, said the assailant had waited on a bench outside before taking a machine-gun out of a bag and 'shooting in every direction'. Witnesses say the man appeared to be in his mid-to-late 20s and wore protective eyeglasses and a windbreaker, while browsing dried fruit at a delicatessen before 'shooting wildly'. The attack comes as Israelis relaxed before sundown and the beginning of Shabbat, the holiest day of the week. An eyewitness being treated for shock told the media that several of the people in the bar were there to celebrate a birthday. It is thought that the attack was carried out by a single gunman who reportedly used an Italian made sub-machine gun, which he took from his backpack before starting the attack.

ISIS claims deadly shooting in Russia’s Caucasus The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for a shooting at an ancient citadel in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan that killed one and injured 11, the SITE Intelligence Group said. “With the help of Allah, the warriors of the Khalifate were able to attack a group of Russian special service officers in the city of Derbent in southern Dagestan, killing one officer and injuring the others,” the monitoring organization SITE quoted ISIS as saying several hours after Wednesday’s deadly attack.
