As most of you regular Holger readers know by now, I haven't waded much into the Presidential elections here - I'm basically waiting for the real (general) elections to do more of that, but I couldn't resist posting the story from Senator John McCain today where he stated that the War in Iraq could be won by 2013.
Here's a bit of the article here at Yahoo News:
Let's just imagine for a moment that you are a Marine or soldier in Iraq right now or you are the family of a fighting man or woman in the Iraq War and you read how John McCain has stood up to say that WE CAN WIN THIS THING! Wow.
Imagine further that you are a Marine just returning from a patrol in Baqubah in Diyala province where you were able to elude a sniper and take him out and now, you've returned to camp and you don't have to hear that the Harry Reids or the John Murthas or the Hillary Clintons or the Barack Hussein Obamas are calling for your immediate surrender to the sandal-wearing, rag headed al Qaeda but you get to hear a man, Senator John McCain, voicing to the world that he sees total victory in four years. Gotta believe there would be some fist pumping going on.
It's way past time that a politician here in the U.S. got off his/her fat ass and told the truth...that our troops have mastered a war in which no fighting force in the world would like to see themselves in due to the tactics of the enemy...and that we can win this war. Way past time.

Republican John McCain declared for the first time Thursday he believes the Iraq war can be won by 2013, although he rejected suggestions that his talk of a timetable put him on the same side as Democrats clamoring for full-scale troop withdrawals.
"By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won," McCain told an audience of several hundred here in the capital city of a general election battleground state.

McCain believes Iraq war can be won by 2013
The Republican presidential contender, in a mystical speech that also envisioned Osama bin Laden dead or captured, and Americans with the choice of paying a simple flat tax or following their standard 1040 form, said only a small number of troops would remain in Iraq by the end of a prospective first term because al-Qaida will have been defeated and Iraq's government will be functioning on its own.
"By January 2013, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won," McCain told an audience of several hundred here in the capital city of a general election battleground state.
Later, as the Arizona senator drove to the airport on his "Straight Talk Express" campaign bus, McCain was peppered by reporters with questions about the timetable. He and his aides insisted there was a difference between ending the war and bringing troops home and, as they criticize the Democrats, announcing a withdrawal upfront without regard for the military endgame.
"It's not a timetable; it's victory. It's victory, which I have always predicted. I didn't know when we were going to win World War II; I just knew we were going to win," McCain said.
The Vietnam veteran added: "I know from experience, you set a day for surrender — which is basically what you do when you say you are withdrawing — and you will pay a much a heavier price later on."
In the primary campaign, McCain had criticized former Republican rival Mitt Romney for hinting at a timetable.
Anything less than victory is total waste of the precious blood that has been spilled there, the amount of money we have spent is nothing, but those lives lost and maimed are worth only victory. I was not happy about the invasion, but once the first boot hit the ground the only acceptable outcome is victory. If the dems win and there is a pullout befor the iraqis can stand on their own, the resulting bloodbath will make viet nam look like a picnic, and that would only be the prelude of things to come.
ReplyDeleteShark,
ReplyDeleteI agree totally with you on what the fallout would be in Iraq if the Dems pull us out. At the same time, I cannot imagine the effect of that surrender on the morale of our fighting forces in America and those of the Guard who have served so well in Iraq.
And not to mention what will happen to the reenlistments as well as recruiting. We could be back at the likelihood of a draft within one year of an Obama administration.
