Holger Diaries: Bin Laden Tape Confirms He Is Done

Well, the big news of the day is a new audio tape released by Osama bin Laden that I will go ahead and assume is authentic. But I want to focus on the main message from the tape and use that to explain why bin Laden, in essence, is history. Here's what the tape revealed according to the article here at Breitbart:

"To Western nations ... this speech is to understand the core reason of the war between our civilization and your civilizations. I mean the Palestinian cause," said bin Laden in the close to 10 minute audiotape.
"The Palestinian cause is the major issue for my (Islamic) nation. It was an important element in fueling me from the beginning and the 19 others with a great motive to fight for those subjected to injustice and the oppressed," added bin Laden.
You notice the huge change in message from bin Laden years ago to now? Where as bin Laden before was obsessed with the western nations - the great Satan of the U.S., the blackmail attempts of Europe and even the battle for Iraq...now, bin Laden has shifted his entire focus to the Palestinians and to Israel. Now, occasionally in the past, bin Laden has made references to Israel but he has been dominated in the clash between the "Crusaders" and the islamists.

So why has bin Laden changed course and what does it mean? I can sum those two questions up very simply: Osama bin Laden's war against the West has been lost, he has given up and his only hope for maintaining any viability for his al Qaeda organization is to hitch a ride on the Shia express that is apparently headed through Israel. That's the reason - Osama bin Laden has seen his almighty al Qaeda sequestered to the mud and rocks of the Pakistani mountains, he has seen his invincible fighters in Iraq pummeled and defeated, he has seen his cells in Europe contained and he has seen his attempts for another U.S. attack foiled, so this icon of terror, this monolith of jihad has become a lowly bandwagon hopper. He has proved to the world now, that he lost his dream, he is a beaten man.

Imagine the hypocrisy of this once proud and staunch Wahabbi islamist - this guy has gone from uniting a world full of muslims to now having to fall in line with the strategies and ideals of the Persians! Bin Laden knows full well that the Iranians have mustered most of the control in the world of jihad - their networks of terror in Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza are setting their sites on a showdown with Israel and bin Laden is trying to hump that same camel. If you really think about it, it is pretty embarassing for the whole Sunni movement of jihad.

Bin Laden once said that Iraq was the jewel of the world of Islam - that it was the shining star, the prize...and when he finally woke up to the fact that U.S. Marines and soldiers had beaten his jihadists like a dirty rug, he has now tried to hold up the flea bags, the misfits of the Arab world, the Palestinians as the prize. Nice try doofus, but to some of us you could have just as well put up a video of this message today with you waving a white flag and bowing to the Shia you have despised all of your life. Game over.

Bin Laden: Palestinian cause fuels war

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Osama bin Laden said in a new audio recording released Friday that al- Qaida will continue its holy war against Israel and its allies until it liberates Palestine.
The terrorist leader's third statement this year came as President Bush was wrapping up his visit to Israel to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Jewish state.
Bin Laden said the fight for the Palestinian cause was the most important factor driving al-Qaida's war with the West and fueled 19 Muslims to carry out the suicide attacks against the U.S. on September 11.
Al-Qaida has been stepping up its attempts to use the Israeli-Arab conflict to rally supporters. Israel has warned of growing al-Qaida activity in Palestinian territory, though the terror network is not believed to have taken a strong role there so far.
The authenticity of the message could not be verified, but it was posted on a Web site commonly used by al-Qaida and the voice resembled the one in past bin Laden audiotapes. Though it was unknown exactly when the audio was recorded, but it referenced Israel's 60th anniversary, which began May 8.
IntelCenter, a U.S. group that monitors al-Qaida message traffic, said the audio message was accompanied by a photo of bin Laden wearing a white robe and turban next to a picture of the Al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. It was unclear when the photo of bin Laden was taken.

  1. Interesting analysis Holger. The publically posited cause and the real cause are however two separate things. They are still in a war of precedence for control of the "Caliphate's Future"... and in that war of precedence their rival is Iran. It will be interesting how that develops over the coming year, and Israel needs to pay attention - they will be attempting to "one up" each other.

  2. Thanks Thanos - your commentary is always appreciated and respected here. And I agree that the two are still rivals, although I think we have seen signs of that relationship warming over the past year. My essential point that I wanted to make here is that bin Laden is not necessarily becoming an ally or minion of the Iranians but has given up on his own course of establishing the Caliphate - he saw the West as the Evil that once conquered, would fall in line with his designs. The Persians have always kept their eye on their prize which is the evil Zionists.

I'm trying to put out there that I think bin Laden has succumbed to the fact that the Iranian strategy was better than his and that his waning control of his legions has forced him to follow at this point, instead of lead.

One other point - a number of months ago, the big flap was all about how al Qaeda had moved into Gaza. Notice there hasn't been a peep about them there in nearly 90 days? What happened to them? Did they absorb into Hamas? Did they move on?

  3. Looks like the photo was photo shopped. And how do we explain Bhutto saying Bin Laden is dead...on this video interview:

anonmyous #2 - I read your comment three times and still don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

  5. On the other hand, Islam has won the hearts of the Middle East, Indonesia, and Central Asia. Yesterday Egypt legalized FGM, made it illegal to report child beatings, removed the age of marriage altogether, and prevented mothers from determining the religion or from stopping an arranged marriage by the father.
