I'm not sure if the Israelis are trying to stir up American support for a strike on Iran's nuclear facilities or if they are simply trying to set the table for some talks with the new President of America on how to deal with the situation, but in this article at The Telegraph the Israelis are warning of Iranian nuclear capabilities, including an attack on North America. Here's some of the details:
Now, a couple of things about this - first, the Israelis, in my view, don't bullshit...they simply do not throw out lame warnings or "the sky is falling" innuendo like the Arabs and Persians do. Second, I think this is probably the biggest indicator of Israeli plans of an airstrike we've seen in over three months.
The speculation has been that the Israelis would strike Iran BEFORE Obama takes office but in recent weeks, it has become very apparent that Israel has NO support from the current Bush administration (I won't even get into all of the examples of President Bush losing his way in the final hours of his Presidency). Thus, I think Israel is setting the table - I personally think that they are planning something for very shortly after Obama takes office ...this may sound crazy to everyone but it's my opinion that the Israelis are WAITING for the novice administration of Barack Obama to take over - that they have determined that they can do the job of eliminating Iranian nukes on their own and that with an indecisive Obama administration, they will not face any backlash in the early stages of the attack.
There is no hype in what Barak is saying here and I don't think there is a single Western leader that would disagree with me.
Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, appealed to world leaders to act now to prevent Iran from continuing its nuclear programme.
"If it built even a primitive nuclear weapon like the type that destroyed Hiroshima, Iran would not hesitate to load it on a ship, arm it with a detonator operated by GPS and sail it into a vital port on the east coast of North America," Mr Barak told a conference of the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University.
Indicating the possibility of an Israeli military strike on Iran, Mr Barak said: "We are not taking any option off the table, and we recommend to the world not to take any option off the table, and we mean what we say."
His comments came as a Russian news agency reported that the Kremlin had confirmed that it will deliver a new air defence system to Iran. The Russian foreign ministry denied reports of the deal in October.

Israel: Iran could attack US with nuclear bomb

But it is now believed to be implementing the deal, which will see Russia deliver an S300 system to the Islamic republic to help it fend off possible air strikes on its nuclear sites by Israel or the US.
The most advanced version of the S-300 system can track targets and fire at aircraft 75 miles away. It is known in the West as the SA20.
And Obama has said in the past he wants to cut Reagan's strategic defense initiative. Do you get the feeling Barry watched a lot of Mr. Roger's Neighborhood when he was a child? (Put that in perspective with his own south side Chicago neighborhood.)
ReplyDeleteClay,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
And LOL about the Mr. Rogers reference - you're right...Obama has been living his whole life in some sort of utopian fog - we saw it with Iraq...he refused to acknowledge that the worst elements of al Qaeda were there to destroy that country and bragged about his "correct" view.
I shudder to think what this man will do as commander-in-chief.
