The Marines Aren't Messing Around In Afghanistan!

What's the saying I'm looking for....? Oh yeah, Get Some! The new Marine force to southern Afghanistan isn't taking much time in making an impact. Just yesterday, when the U.S. and Coalition forces were searching some Taliban compounds for Taliban commanders, they received some fire and when they counter attacked, they killed at least 12 Taliban fighters. Here's part of the article here at Breitbart:

At least a dozen Taliban fighters were killed during a major anti-insurgent operation by Afghan and Coalition forces that also forced thousands of people to flee their homes in southern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.
Twelve militants were killed in the Garmsir district of volatile Helmand Province on Monday, the Coalition forces said in a statement Tuesday.
Troops came under fire in the district -- said to be a nest of militants involved in antigovernment insurgency -- while searching compounds for a Taliban commander involved in supplying weapons to militants, the statement said.
The troops returned fire and "around a dozen militant extremists were killed," it said.

Now, the AP is intent on focusing this report on "thousands fleeing their homes" just because the AP is a bunch of Taliban sympathizers - the fact of the matter is probably more that the U.S. and Afghan forces purposely have had people temporarily abandon some villages in order to expose the human shield-using Taliban. The AP left that part out of their report that the Taliban hide inside villages to escape attacks.

But this is excellent news - it shows the Marines are going right into the hornet nests and with 12 Taliban dead in just one firefight, look for huge counts by the end of the week.

12 die, thousands flee in fear of airstrikes in s. Afghanistan+

KABUL, May 13 (AP) - (Kyodo)—At least a dozen Taliban fighters were killed during a major anti-insurgent operation by Afghan and Coalition forces that also forced thousands of people to flee their homes in southern Afghanistan, officials said Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Shamsuddin Sarhadi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation, said fighting and airstrikes forced around 900 families -- about 5,000 people -- to leave their homes in the Garmsir district.
Most of them are now in a camp outside the district and receiving assistance from the Afghan government and United Nations, he said.

  1. Oorah baby!! My son is a Cpl. with the 1/6 Marines, the ones doing the a$$-kicking! It's a shame the insurgents have to hide in civilian houses and use them as shields. It's smart for the law-abiding citizens to move temporarily. Don't worry, we'll be done killing there in no time and you can move back!
Thanks for that report!! Go 1/6!

  4. ken, ted and jpanddizzy,

First off, I'm honored to have you here commenting at Holger Awakens and let me say how truly much I thank your sons and nephew for their service to this Great Country.

For those Holger readers who are not completely aware of what the 1/6 Marines did in Ramadi, Iraq, here is a link to what I think is a good review of their operations and TREMENDOUS success there:

The 1/6 relieved the 3/8 Marines in Ramadi and i think it is safe to say that there is NO WHERE in Iraq that a worse hellhole was turned completely around. And if I was the Taliban knowing the 1/6 was on their way to Helmand, I would have put my tail between my legs and hoofed it to Pakistan weeks ago.

  6. cindy,

You have every right to be proud! Bless your son. I personally think the Marines of the 1/6 have an opportunity to change the course of things in Afghanistan. It's my feeling that with some seriously good momentum that the 1/6 will create, that the other NATO countries will feel that surge ...they will reconsider their lack of commitment and with 5,000 to 10,000 more NATO troops committed to the fight, Afghanistan can be gutted of the Taliban.

And when that happens, we might just look back at this night, the night we were discussing how the 1/6 could start the whole ball rolling.

    Thanks for stopping by, cindy.
