It would probably qualify as the least significant news headline in the Middle East in the past two weeks. It would probably qualify as the briefest news story of the Israeli-Gaza conflict. This is the headline and story from YNET, today...Sunday March 9, 2008:
Let me explain. After weeks and hundreds and hundreds of rockets and missiles being fired into its southern areas (mostly Sderot and then Ashkelon), the Israelis finally responded with operations in Gaza that killed over 120 Hamas and Islamic Jihad jihadists. Then Israel withdrew. They had made their point that no more action against the Israeli people would be tolerated. And what happened next made headlines across the world. The jihadists planned and carried out a massacre of 8 teen age Israeli children in a seminary sanctuary. While the world looked on in horror, while nations condemned the attack, while Israelis grieved and mourned and buried their young, the jihadists celebrated.
And the world watched to see what Israel would do to avenge this cruel and inhuman attack on innocents. And nothing happened. It is my view, that the Israeli government was willing (however wrong you feel that is) to wait and see. The world watched Israel, Israel watched Gaza.
And on Sunday afternoon, on March 9th, 2008 Hamas launched a Qassam rocket into southern Israel. That single rocket landed harmlessly without damage to property, without loss of Israeli life, without injury to a single Israeli citizen. But it told the Israeli government that Hamas had made a decision to continue. Hamas had sealed the fate of what was to come.
I have predicted a calculated Israeli response to the Jerusalem massacre and this single rocket attack will, in my opinion, seal the fate of that happening. The Israelis have distributed a portfolio of photos of the carnage of the Jerusalem attack worldwide - they have ensured that the world knows exactly what happened. And now they will act. But do not expect tanks and troops to invade Gaza - not initially, anyway. It is my belief that the Israelis have been huddled in intelligence meetings since the blood of the teens in the seminary was still dripping onto the floor. They have been meticulously determining who thought up the attack, who planned the attack, who carried out the attack and who celebrated the attack.
Some of you have seen how Hamas backtracked on their claim of responsibility for the attack. That is because Hamas knows what I say, is true. The Israelis are a patient people. Unlike the jihadists who impatiently cry out for revenge and rush to arms in anger, the Israelis believe in retribution and atonement. The Israelis believe in cutting the head off of the snake. The Israelis believe in revenge against ALL involved in an act. Some maverick pali sympathizer in Jerusalem did not haphazardly walk into a seminary to kill Jews. This was a master plan developed by a network with tentacles reaching many parts of the jihadist empire.
The Israeli response, in my view, will target all who were involved in the inception and the planning and that has to touch Iran, Syria, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Gaza's Hamas. Fatah, more than likely, gave approval at some point. There are the connections in Hamas that delivered the tactics and weapons. Like I say, this atrocity touches many, many jihadists and their leaders.
While I see the first stages of Israeli response beginning as soon as today or tomorrow, this is going to be a long operation. There are Iranian and Syrian leaders involved in the massacre who may not meet their sentence for months, perhaps for years. But they will pay.
Most of the world has been watching and waiting for something to happen. Most of the world didn't notice this one Qassam missile land today. All of the world will see the result of a single rocket landing in Sdot Negev very soon. And the perpetrators of the crime in Jerusalem will see the last of their days.

Thanks for stopping by! Yes...I think we all want the action to come - at the same time, we can't deny the looks of a "setup" here so I am in favor of a measured and calculated response - I, personally, will let 200 jihadists go free in place of 5 or 10 key jihadist leaders who will pay the ultimate price. We can get the 200 later when they are wandering aimlessly without direction - the key now is to cut off the ugly head of this snake so it dies.
